How do you block out the rest of the world?

My friend who takes adipex and lost 60lbs on it, does not exercise at all, still eats like she used to constantly asks me why I can't keep up with her... and reminds me that I won't look good in my bridesmaids dress for her wedding.
The skinny gal at work who does nothing, still eats her fries and has (I have to assume on this one) an ungodly metabolism
The ladies in the office to have a butt-load of money to throw into Medifast who have lost 30 & 50 lbs respectively
My cubicle mate who wants to lose weight but doesn't want to put any effort into trying
And lastly the gals in the warehouse who go to Zumba 4 nites a week becasue they don't have little kids to tend to, find babysitters for, and have the time to go all those nights, who have dropped the weight by sweating thier *kitten* off.
I know that I'm retarded when it comes to weight loss. I know what I have to do, I know what I will, and what I won't do, so I also know it's going to take me much longer to acheive any result
But seriously, when you are starting out and this fragile (I want to be strong, but I know better) how do you block it out?

I try to make the best of what I have to work with. Everyone is not me and I do what works for me. Worrying about what others are doing, or comparing myself to them is a waste of my time and energy.
Some people can eat and eat and eat whatever they want and never gain, but that doesn't mean that they are healthy.
Also, try to remind yourself that you are making a permanent change. This is just my opinion, the people who are losing weight with diet aids will probably gain more weight back than they lose. Slow and steady wins the race.
If a friend of mine commented to me that I would not look good in a bridesmaids dress for her wedding, I would say something like "I don't want to outshine the bride." If she continued with her comments I would ask her if she wanted me to bow out because of my weight, or if it is more important that I stand up next to her and support her on her wedding day.
Keep at it and don't let them discourage you from your goal.0 -
It's a hard one. You have to ignore the people who are not doing it in a healthy and lasting way. (Hmmm, I need to ignore myself, but anyway!) You have to do what you must to lose the weight, and everyone is different.
Here's a nasty fact. Recent research shows that obese people have a much harder time taking weight off and keeping weight off than skinnier people do. Something about the hormones in the fat. The longer you've been heavy, the worse the effect. That means, some of us have to work twice as hard, for an unknown amount of time, to keep an equal weight with someone who's never been heavy.
You can never compare yourself to others. Make it a competition with yourself to maximize your weight loss. I like playing games like that with myself. It helps alot. I made 1.5 miles in 30 minutes. Can I make 1.6 this time? That kind of thing.0 -

you DONT.
what you lack is the education on how to do all that stuff, live a real life, eat enjoyable foods.. and still maintain a healthy weight.
some people do that naturally.. the skinny girl at work may be eating those fries, but skipping breakfast and having a light dinner. or no dinner.
To break it down to bulletpoints, it works likes this:
1. your bodys mass (weight) depends on the average number of calories consumed over time.
2. your bodys composition depends primarily on the macros you eat, and secondary on the activities you perform.
3. its 80% diet, 20% other.
thats the basic concept.
For a more through explanation from people that actually live the life and get the results, checkout the forum on bodybuilding.com.. read the stickys, and then read them again. then search and read the threads. I wouldnt post on there until you UNDERSTAND everything in the stickys... its a tougher crowd in there, that doesnt accept BS and hates questions that are already answered, but theres a very good knowledge base of what actually works.0 -
Don't compare yourself to anyone else. Compare yourself to where you used to be.0

First of all ... NEVER say this about yourself : " I know that I'm retarded when it comes to weight loss. " ! You do know what YOU need to do and the keyword here is " YOU ". Stop comparing and looking at other people for excuses. I know that sounds brutal ... but I am hoping it clicks !
You are the sole provider of your well being ... it doesn't take fancy gym equipment, nor a ton of money to make the lifestyle changes necessary to redeem your health. Take comfort in knowing that weightloss achieved through unrealistic terms ... such as drugs and gimmicks ... is not only unhealthy, it is unrealistic. Why do you ask ? Because it's NOT a lifestyle change .. it's a temporary fix ! The minute those women go back to their real lives and eating habits ... their toast ! Unfortunately, people look for fast results at any cost ... when positive and long lasting results are virtually free !
The ladies who workout at Zumba classes 4 nights a week ... AWESOME JOB ! They bust their *kitten* to achieve their goals ... as an outsider looking in ... we can assume anything we want .... so instead of assuming they have all the time in the world ... why don't you assume they have sacrificed some things in their lives to achieve this.
I workout 7 days a week ( 2 hrs min per day ) ... I have an 11 yr old son ... I work 50 to 60 hrs a week. I have made the choices, the sacrifices to have a healthy lifestyle ... and now from all my hard work and determination ... I don't sacrifice anything ... I reap the benefits of being in the best shape of my life ! We all have to make choices ... when there is a will ... there is a way !
Weightloss is simple ... Eat Healthy. Exercise. Drink plenty of H2O. AND most importantly :
ALWAYS REMAIN POSITIVE !
My best advice to you in how to block out the rest of the world ....
Stop trying and start showing the rest of the world what YOUR made of ! When life throws you a curve ball ... you have three choices : Duck, let it hit you ... or STEP OUT OF THE BOX AND HIT IT WITH YOUR BEST SHOT !
I hope this motivates you ... I want nothing more than for you to wake up and know that today starts a NEW day and you are in complete control of your life ! Nobody else's opinion matters ... YOU GOT THIS !0 -
its not just starting out fragile. everyone is fragile in some way. im still fragile my scale finally moved 1 lb. . . 30lbs over the past probably 6 months(im having a very hard time)and i was excited then other person posted i lost 33 lbs in the last couple months. . . excitement was gone
even after 6 or more months its still tuchy is the point lol some of us r jus gonna work out tushy off and not get as fast results. hell pretty much no results half the time
so as for the ignorin and getting through it part just tlk to the people who r there for u and just think(for thos fad dieters) they r gonna gain it back or feel horrid from taking that crap for so long and by then u will have dropped some lbs n they will be like. . . wow we shoudl have done it right. . . and as for thhe lucky one with the high metablolism. . . itll catch up to her one day. . . ur always going to be faced with the idiots of the world but remember here on mfp were all in the same boat

Don't focus on them .Think about yourself. You're getting in shape for you, not for them so anything negative that they have to say shouldn't matter. If your friend is nagging you about not keeping up with her tell her that you don't find it helpful and unless she has something positive to say to keep it to herself. It may sound a bit rude but I'm sure it's no worse than her nagging you.0

I am in a similar boat.
I finally thought to talk to myself with the same advice I would give my children. I found that if I give myself the opportunity and forgiveness I would give them..the more productive I am in reaching my goal. I gotta walk the walk to show them the healthy lifestyle I want them to live.
My upbringing was anything but healthy eating. Nor is my family supportive in my weight loss to this day. I'm doing it for my kids. I don't want my girls taking the quick weight loss pills and gimmicks. Why would I do it to myself?
Time to block out the rest of the world and be an example for your kids.0 -
First of all ... NEVER say this about yourself : " I know that I'm retarded when it comes to weight loss. " ! You do know what YOU need to do and the keyword here is " YOU ".
I would agree that its key to know yourself... but if more people admitted they were ignorant on how to lose and maintain weight, and then worked towards learning about it, the world would be a more fit place.
I think its a GOOD thing she realizes she doesnt know much about it. The next step here is education.
Only then will she know what she needs to do.
Obviously you have had alot of success. Im sure some education on what to do and how to do it was the first part of it.0
