I realize this is a calorie counting site but has anyone here tried to just do portion control and not counting anything and, if so, how did it go?

Portion control works! But you need to be 100% honest with it all. Measure everything. Use a smaller plate. I just have no willpower, and have to count calories!

If you strictly measure portions, I bet you'll find you'll be counting calories too. They go hand in hand and you really can't have one without the other.

But in all fairness, if you just try portion control without watching the calories, it may be bad news.

I "try" to do portion control with items that are hard to track calorie wise i.e. when eating out or eating something that has a lot of stuff in it like a caserole, soup etc.

I'm measuring and weighing currently and counting calories. Recently reread The Portion Teller Plan and every time I reread it, it makes me want to just watch my portions lol.

I agree. It still comes down to how many calories are in that specific portion.

I've been practicing portion control only and i've lost 18lbs since November. The weight has come off slowly, but portion control is starting to become second nature to me. I do use a dessert plate and I always try to leave a few bites. The uneaten food at every meal are extra calories. I'm enjoying the freedom portion control has given me. I eat whatever I want and I love that.

Portion control (only) is great for someone already eating healthy foods. If you're like some though, a fair number of your calories are empty calories. Yes, with portion control you are eating fewer empty calories (but in the same proportions). Small portions of food PLUS empty calories = hungry more often.

Logging foods helps many people get the "most bang for their calorie buck"
