Hey everyone. I'm struggling really hard with the "what's the point" feelings. It is so hard to work out or eat right when it feels like it isn't working anyway. :( I do know my calories are too low most days (it's very hard to eat more than I already do and to make sure that they are healthy calories!) How do all of you stay away from the "bad" foods and get yourself to continuously push hard during your workouts??? What is your motivational "saying", "push" or "picture"?

It's hard to think about the bigger picture when you're working hard and you don't see the results. During those times I always try to think where I would be if I wasn't exercising. I think that is what helps me the most, because I remember exactly how I felt and how I looked when I wasn't dieting and exercising and although I am not at my goal by any means, I am a lot healthier and happier where I am.
  • It's so important to not JUST set a weight goal. Set a smaller, short term goal..."I want to run a mile straight," or "I want to do 10 regular push ups" or "I want to stay within my calories for a week straight". Those are attainable, short term goals that will help keep you motivated to achieve your ultimate goal. Even break it down into a daily goal..."Today I will eat more vegetables and find one new protein I enjoy". If you just look at the finish line it seems impossible. If you just wait for the scale to move, you will get discouraged. And I know it sounds cheesy, but physically right down these goals so you can check them off and SEE what you have accomplished.
  • And this is my favorite motivational photo of all time.

How are you measuring your success? Strictly by the scale? You should consider other things as well - measurements, energy levels, how you feel, etc.

Also, you need to be patient. You didn't gain all that weight in one day and you won't lose it in one month either. For me, it's remember how uncomfortable I was in my own skin - I NEVER want to feel that way again. That reason is enough for me. You'll have to find your own reason to dig deep.

giving up won't make you feel good. it'll be just a terrible cycle. cuz 3 months from now you'll regret giving up. you only live once. be happy with yourself and just do it!! your body will thank you and you'll thank yourself. dont give up. think of how rewarding it will be.

When I'm struggling with the same feelings you are having, I come on here and look at the Success Stories boards. The posts inspire me.

My goal is to run a 5k this year. So, when I'm running, and my legs feel like they are on fire, and I can't catch my breath, I imagine what it will feel like when I cross that finish line.

Obviously, my goal is the same as most on this board - to lose weight and become a healthier person. But, rather than making the number on the scale my obsession, I am trying to focus on the positive changes I am seeing in my body and the way that makes me feel. In the past 6 weeks, I have made much more dramatic changes to my body than that scale reflects, and I feel totally different about the woman I see in the mirror than I used to.

    Good luck to you!

Thank you ladies. As you all know somedays are just harder than others. I have been making sure to measure not only the scale but my measurements as well. Unfortunately for me, the measurements all stayed the same except for my biceps and thighs, which both gained size. :( I know this is actually muscle, but it is still sometimes hard to take. :) I appreciate all of your kind words and advice!!! Sometimes, I'm the most positive person I know...other times...not so much. Just fell into a pool of self pity and took at bit of time to drag my sorry butt out! Doing much better now and looking forward to the next workout! Thanks again! Inspiration and motivation comes from within...but sometimes we need the support of others to make us remember that!!!
