What do you eat when you're SICK

Hello;
For the past 3 days I've been sick sick sick. Head pounding, ear splitting, throat swollen shut and painful sick. I've tried eating but a lot of the time I end up feeling like I'm going to throw up afterwards. I tried eating toast since it normally helps when my stomach is upset and it scratched up my already sore throat more. Soup is an obvious solution, but it sounds unappetizing. I've been drinking regular gingerale instead of diet to try and get some calories in, plus trying to keep up with my water.

So what is your go to when you're sick?

For sore throat, yes soup works well. Also: Apple sauce, jello made with fruit juice, mandarins (can even be those mushy ones in a cup such as Dole's)

Avoid anything acidic, orange juice, pineapple etc. White tea will have you better in 1 day, so good for you.

Broth, power aid frozen into cubes, V8 and I then try to hold down broiled, unseasoned fish and plain brown rice.
Once I can keep that down, I progress on up to a trip to Burger King.

    THEN I KNOW I'M CURED!
  • I wish I had asked this question a couple of weeks ago when I was sick, because I ended up not really eating much for two days, and my weight loss has stalled out since then. I've actually gained a couple of pounds that I can't shake since I've been well. Starvation mode is true!

I've been eating a lot of popsicles, applesauce, and stuff like that. Haven't been too worried about calories, as I haven't had much of an appetite and have basically had to force myself to eat for the last few days.

I buy low sodium chicken broth....and heat it to boiling with tricolor pasta (I like Trader Joe's brands, but you can buy them anywhere0. If you feel like eating anything a little more solid, then add cubes of cooked chicken and slice up some carrots or chop some baby carrots.) Quick and easy.

Eggs-either scrambled or over easy with a REALLY runny yolk to soften up toast, bananas-even though I don't care for them they are soft and easy on the throat, Rice-a-Roni cheesy flavors or chicken flavor-I don't like plain white rice and have never tried brown rice....and a LOT of chicken noodle soup or tomato soup. Hope this helps...get well soon!! :flowerforyou:

I still like a comfort meal from when I was little. My mom would take toast and put peanut butter and some syrup on in. Then she would put warm some milk and pour it over the toast. Fairly high in calories, easy to eat because it is soft and you get some protein too. It sounds yucky but is really yummy.

lower sodium progresso soup They have a lot of light versions that are between 140-160 per can. I throw a few multigrain croutons in there and I am good to go. Also sugar free jello egg beaters since they are soft. lots of water.

    Hope you feel better soon!

Any and all soups. We make huge pots and freeze it whenever we make something. So if you're not up to making from scratch chicken noodle, or minestrone, or bean soup then when you are feeling better you should do it. Trust me when I say it's the best thing in the world to decide I want some chili and get to take a bag out of the freezer rather than a can from a cabinet.

If you can eat a salad I would suggest that. Skip any dressings or heavy toppings and keep it as light as possible.

Protein shakes. Go or get someone to go to GNC and get the Lean Shakes to go. Strawberry is my fave.

I love Tom Yum soup. Just the broth. Will open those passages right up.

    Feel better, hon

For a sore throat I always do HOT water with honey and some lemon juice. It seems strange but the hotter I can stand the water the better.

    potatoe soup.
( 1) Boil potatoes and mash them in the water they are in. salt and pepper.
    (2) Boil potatoes. Drain off most water. Add milk and butter.( or replace butter with bacon) Cheese and Mash. Salt and pepper.
This has been the sick food in my family for as long as I can remember.(1) is for for sickness that makes you queasy at the thought or smell of food . Any sickness calls for it. Ear ache, pms,flu... You name it. It is also good for when you don't know what you want and keep eating everything. This will kill that craving for you don't know what. Sorry your sick and hope you get well soon.

I think I am the only person who doesn't go for soup when they're sick! I tend to basically eat whatever Im thinking sounds good if I'm sick. I know that's not the healthy answer at all but usually so much sounds unappealing to me that I'll attempt to eat anything that doesn't make me gag thinking about it. Gingerale, Popsicles, potatoes, toast, those are staples for me when I'm sick. I hope you feel better soon!

When you're sick, eat whatever you can stomach. Don't worry about calories until you get better.
Drink lots of fluids. Ginger ale is good, so is hot tea. I like hot apple juice to sooth a sore throat and prevent sinus infections.
I try to avoid sugary drinks and dairy when I'm sick, because they seem to irritate my throat. But ginger ale is good.
If your throat's really sore, there are some herbal teas specifically intended for that. I used to use one called Throat Coat, but I haven't needed it in a long time, so I don't know if it's even still on the market.

Be careful drinking green and black tea. These contain caffeine, and you need your sleep.

I usually eat what I crave, ironically, I used to have a very sweet tooth but when I was ill, all I used to crave was soup, soup and more soup and sometimes an orange.

Watch if you are vomiting, it can send your electrolytes all out of synch. Eat that which you genuinely crave, don't force something down because you think you should.

Hope you recover very soon x

I'm with you. It's not healthy to "eat whatever you want" but when you're sick, you just have to eat. Anyway, I find when I'm sick I crave what I need. My mom used to say "starve a fever, feed a cold". It means when you're really sick, you lose your appetite. When you're mildly sick you get really hungry. That's how she knew we were ok: when we started eating everything.

And be sure to post something when you start feeling better. Getting back on track is gonna be hard after being so sick, but you've got the whole MFP community to talk you in to it.

I was sick this past week and found myself eating a lot of canned soup. Yeah, it's high in sodium but I consider that a fair trade off for the "throw it on the stove for 5 minutes, eat it, and fall back into a cold-medicine induced sleep" kind of convenience.

I also found that I really like diet 7UP...the bubbles made my throat feel better and it doesn't have caffeine so it was somewhat better at keeping me hydrated. In fact I'm thinking I might start buying it a little more frequently even when I'm well, to cut back on the caffeine.
