I've been looking at getting some of her DVD's but I'm a bit worried that they will be too hard for me to do now. I'm still 52 pounds overweight and I would rate my fitness to be about 3/10. I have very little strength, especially in my upper body. Would anyone recommend them and which ones?

Thanks!

  • The DVDs from JM are good because they adapt the exercises to different levels of strength/fitness and you can stick with whichever workouts you find more comfortable, moving on to the tougher ones as your fitness improves and the weight starts to come off - which it will!
I'd recommend the 30 day shred for sure - I am currently doing it and really having fun, on day 12 and level 2, but I think I'll be on this level for quite some time as it's quite tough!
GOOD LUCK in your journey :-)

Is there a lot of body weight exercises in her DVDs?

There are a few body weight exercises but everything can be modified. There are pushups but you can do girlie ones or do them against the wall. I say get one and try it. They are cheap enough at walmart that you can try one. If you can not do an exercise modify it but keep moving. If the weights are too much drop them and do the exercise without the weights. Just keep pushing through it. I did 2 rounds of 30 Day Shred I weighed over 200 whe I first did it and 188 now. I lost over 25 inches in teh 2 rounds of 30 Day shred but not a ton of pounds. I'll take inches over pounds anyday though. My waist went from 44 inched to 34 inches. I say it's a great workout and you can do if you push through it.

If you fancy a taster before you buy, the whole of level 1 day 1 of the 30 day shred is on you tube

Start out with the 30 day shred... it is great for beginners. I started out about 100 lbs over weight and was able to do it with modifications. I am finally able to do (most of it) without the modifications and am still 76 lbs overweight. You will build so much strength doing it... it is wonderful! I plan on trying some of her other DVD's soon.

I agree - start with the 30 Day Shred and do your best - you will improve quickly! Remember what Jillian is famous for - The Biggest Loser, and she even mentions on some of her workouts, "I have 400lb people who can do this, so can you!". Another of my favorite quotes from her: "You have no idea how strong you are until you try!"

I agree with the others...30DS is great! Ripped in 30 is an awesome program too but probably a little tougher than the Shred. I love Jillian's DVD's! Besides these two I also do her No More Trouble Zones which is very heavy on strength training and lower on cardio (it is definitely helping my arms gain some needed strength). It is a 55 minute workout though including the warm up and cool down so you definitely get your exercise in. And another good one if you like cardio is Banish Fat, Boost Metabolism. Another 55 minute one and pure cardio all the way through. It's crazy but effective. And she does two kickboxing circuits which I love!
  • One suggestion I would have would be to rent the JM DVD's that are available at your local library for free. I too, recommend the 30 day shred, probably one of her easier ones. I would also suggest the Biggest Loser DVD's that she's in as well. Lots of different exercises to try out and modify to your current exercise level. Good luck!

I liked 6pack in 6weeks better then 30 Day Shred. The workouts I find I was not dreading as much- I do not plan on having a 6pack in 6 weeks but I can pray anyways  I will be getting more of her dvd's

I have 30 Day Shred, 6 week 6 pack and Yoga Meltdown. I am finding 6 week 6 pack the most difficult. 30 Day Shred will help you get stronger, no doubt. And I am also enjoying Yoga Meltdown.

How is the Yoga one? I was reading reviews and it says it's mostly for like die hard yoga types. I'm just beginning and just ordered the biggest loser yoga one, but I've been tempted by hers. Is it too difficult for beginners?

I am about 70ish pounds overweight(or from goal) as of now, and have been doing her dvds for quite some time now. I have about 6-7 of them and they're mostly all the hard ones because I didn't know she had some for beginners, opps:embarassed: LOL

but anyway, they are good because even if you can't finish them, you can always come back and see yourself getting stronger and stronger, and she has modifications.

I suggest boost metabolism, burn fat dvd as your first

awesome thanks! I'll see how I like the biggest loser yoga one (according to reviews its a good place to start as he kinda walks you through how things should look and feel) and move on to that one. I've done a few yoga classes at my gym but it's at a time that's hard for me to make so I wanted something to do at home

You could check the videos/dvds out of the library first, try them out, and it wouldn't cost you a thing! I don't know about your local library, but most libraries have a pretty extensive selection. Good luck!
  • I did her Yoga Meltdown for a month to build some strength before doing her harder ones. Yoga Meltdown is great for starting to build muscle, and I definitely think it helped me prepare for 30 Day Shred and Ripped in 30. My fitness was 2/10 when I started YM, and I think was a 4.5/10 after a month. Definitely helped for the harder dvds!
  • I started with 30DS then moved onto No More Trouble Zones and Burn Fat Boost Metabolism. I love NMTZ, never did BFBM again after the JM 30 Day Challenge on here was over.

I have her 6 week 6 pack and I like it, but I haven't done it in a while. I liked it, it was definitely a work out.

Going to start her Killer Buns and Thighs [or whatever it's called] this week, and keep with the NMTZ...I really like NMTZ.

I'm another lover of 30 DS though I will say if you are not strong enough in the arms you may need to alternate arms or go with body weight for some of the arm / weight lifts but likely only at first.

It really works well for the 30 sec 'sets' and keeping your heart rate up.

Still need to get my hands on NMTZ one of these days. And I love the kickboxing in BFBM too! Did you see that she has a new Kickboxing workout coming out next month? Can't wait!

As for Yoga Meltdown - it's a good workout for balance and strength. When I first got it I did it regularly, then started mixing other DVDs in, then stopped it for a long time. Now that I'm working out harder again (and added running with C25K program), I'm finding that the Yoga DVD is perfect for me on Saturdays - great stretching and some strength without any weights or even shoes. It was very hard for me at first, also my first experience with any time of Yoga, but I've gotten much better at it over time. I also find that Jillian uses some of the poses & moves in her other workouts, so I was glad to have had a bit of experience with them.

I'm a regular yoga goer in the yoga studio but I'm not always able to go as often I as I would like. Since I loved JM's Ripped in 30, I picked up Yoga Meltdown. It's actually not for the yoga die hard. It's quite basic in terms of yoga poses. But what works is that Jillian takes the basic moves and turns them into fluid movement. That's where the calorie burn comes in for the meltdown part. So its yoga basic meets cardio. As a yogini, I'm used to static poses. So I did find the movement in the poses new for my body and gave me quite the workout. So it's not harder yoga, but it is a heart strengthening routine. The great part... I just kept pushing through it and now my regular yoga classes seem much easier. In fact, holding the static poses almost seems like a relaxing cool down. lol. I would def recommend it.

Thanks guys, I'm definitely going to try 30DS and see how I get on from there!
  • The best part about JM dvd's is that they're only about 30 mintues! So even though she can be tough, I can push through anything if it's only 30 minutes =). And with 2 kids under 3, sometimes that's all I get to do in a day so I want it to count. I have 30DS and killer buns and thighs and they're both worth it. I like that there's multiple workout videos so I can't get bored. And if I'm sick of her yelling at me, I just turn on some fun music and get going!

I own 30 Day Shred, Front Side & Back Side for beginners, and Cardio Kickbox - ALL of them are awesome! I def. recommend 30 Day shred~ I haven't been tracking long, but since joining MFP & keeping track I've lost 8 pounds in about 3 weeks!

I've just purchased the Burn Fat Boost Metabolism DVD, will be my first day tomorrow will let you know how it goes....:flowerforyou:
  • Is the 30 day shred (Phases 1-3) the same workout for each Phase (10 days)? I'm concerned that might be a bit boring to do the same exercise routine 10 days solid then switch to a new routine for 10 days. Any thoughts?
