fiber especially when consumed with liquid (water) will 'fill you up'.
protein does also however promote satiety.

personally for me, fiber does it for me..protein doesnt make me feel full nor does it curb my hunger.
  • Protein does it for me, especially if you regularly consume fiber. I only eat whole grains, so for a couple of years now I get a minimum of 100% of my RDA of fiber. It will help keep you full, but from a mental/emotional standpoint, protein keeps the hunger away longer for me!

It probably depends on the person. Fiber is great for making me feel full, but I don't stay full. It actually moves things through me if you know what I mean.

Protein doesn't take up as much room in my belly, so I don't feel full right away, but it takes me longer to get hungry.

For me - protein. And it's repairing and maintaining my body too.
  • don't underestimate the role of healthy fats
  • Protein depending on the source, egg whites and fish are the only two types of meat i eat..and then protein shakes (whey mostly) but whey protein shakes do not fill you up. they are digested quiet quickly. But fiber does help me feel full, also makes me feel bloated...eek.

Yep, fats also make you feel full longer, but choose unprocessed ones. The worse foods for satisfying you are simple carbs.

We don't need fiber but we need protein. For me one cup grilled steak, chicken or turkey does the trick... I need about 10 cups broccoli to fill me up!

thank you! this is helpful. I guess I'll have to pay more attention to how I feel next time after eating both and see which works best for me.

Healthy fats like almonds? What are some other examples of healthy fats?

This may be different for different people. I find if I drink a whey protein shake, I can not eat for several hours afterward. I do like to add a fiber supplement to it, so that may have something to do with it, but I am trying to avoid these actually because then I do not end up eating enough calories in the day because I lose my appetite!

Yes almonds have healthy fats, and 1/4 cup of them will stave off hunger for me for a couple hours!~!
    Other examples would be
    Avacodos
100% pure virgin olive oil ( I find that unrefined and coldpressed are healthiest, although expensive)
    coconut oil
most kinds of nuts, not just almonds, even peanut butter (we get smuckers natural)
    fish
    olives

When looking at the fat content, just make sure that there is not a lot of "saturated fat" if it does have a lot of that then it is definitely not a healthy fat!

I don't know which fills me up more because I rarely eat one without the other. And I rarely eat those without fat. I suspect the fat actually fills me up the most of each, but I don't really know since I never eat just fat. But it really doesn't matter, I'll just stick with the mix since that is working.

i can't have a lot of fiber, so i generally go with protein. it works ok; if i'm still hungry, i have hot decaf after the meal. that usually does the trick.
  • actually certain saturated fats are healthy. coconut and coconut oil is an excellent example.

healthy fats: almonds, avocados, chia seeds, ground flaxseed meal, eggs (yolk), olive oil, etc
