I just learned I have gestational diabetes yesterday. It seems so overwhelming. I have an app with an endocrinologist tomorrow am. Just wondering if anyone has any tips or advice that made the expirence easier. What foods to avoid (obviously processed foods or refined sugar) and which are good.I know nothing about how to manage this and did not see it coming!
Any personal stories or tips would be appreciated!!! Thanks!

I had GD with my second pregnancy. I was able to manage it well with diet alone. You have to avoid carbs in addition to refined sugars. Limit breads, pasta, cereals, etc. Eat more protein and veggies. The hardest part was having to finger prick myself 4 times a day. Your endocrinologist will most likely provide you with lists of foods to eat and avoid.0

Every person is going to be a little different. Lots of fresh veggies, some fruits (watch out for grapes, bananas and dried fruits, holy sugar!). My BF has type 1 diabetes. He can eat just like everyone else, he just tries to limit his starches and not too much fat. Listen to the doctors! They will help you through!0

I had GD when I was pregnant with my twins. The Dr can give you a diet with the exchanges and what exchanges that you eat at each meal, you don't have to cut anything out. You just eat a balanced diet.0

I had it with my son. I had a completely ignorant and useless nutritionist who told me to replace sugar with artificial sweeteners, to avoid carbs and eat very little fruits and vegetables. Of course, I didn't listen to her and did lots of research and figured things out for myself.
Honestly, I have no idea why I failed my glucose tests. The only thing I can think is that I was eating too often and my body didn't have the chance to process the sugars from my food so they built up in my blood stream. Once I stopped snacking between meals because I had to wait an hour to check my blood sugar I didn't have to cut anything out of my diet. I could even drink soda and eat sweets with no problem. Naturally, I avoided most refined sugar but it was nice to know that I could have some ice cream without spiking my blood sugar. For some reason, rice was the only thing that raised my blood sugar.
My advice is to get your glucose monitor and experiment with your food. Try eating normally one day to see how high that makes your sugar levels and then adjust things from there. Switch white carbs for whole grains, eat low GI fruits and vegetables, avoid refined sugar and especially high fructose corn syrup.0
