Best exercise with an injured ankle?

So I have recently injured my ankle, I have no idea how, I did not roll on it , or turn it. After a high impact work out , or after a run it gets very swollen and painful to put weight on. I plan to try to see the Dr today, but I have a feeling he is going to tell me to avoid running and any other high impact stuff... I spend 5 days a week at the gym doing step classes and interval training mostly very high impact stuff and then on the weekends I run. How am I supposed to exercise if I have to avoid everything I am currently doing? Is my only option the stationary bike? Rowing? I am about 7 weeks into my exercise/diet regime and I am totally in a groove and crave the workout high every day. I am terrified if I can't work out I am just going to lose all the momentum I have gained so far? I think swimming is an option as well, but there is no pool at my work gym, and I have 2 small kids to feed and get to bed every night, by the time that is all said and done the pool is closed.

Any suggestions? Anyone experienced this? Any idea how I could have hurt my ankle without actually doing something like tripping, falling, rolling it ?

thanks nicole

Do you have an ankle brace? I sprained/fractured both my ankles (stepped off a curb) in Oct. I still have weakness and pain. I use my ankle brace religiously and it does help. It was about $40. Good luck!
  • No I don't but that's a great suggestion, I am also going to wrap it with a tensor bandage for now. Are you able to work out with the brace on?
  • If you can't get to the pool, maybe cycling or skating? That's about all I can think of for lower impact/high cardio exercise. Other than that, maybe focus on doing heaps of core workout pilates until you heal. May as well get a six pack while you're recovering! Good luck!

LOL! Yes, that is definitely what I should do! There is a pilates class tomorrow, I think I'll check it out. At least until I can get in to see my Dr.

    Hello!

I ruptured all three lateral ligaments, tore the deltoid & calcaneal ligaments ... Had two surgeries ( august & october ) and spent 6 months total in a cast.

I was suggested to get a hand bike, but since your likely looking at a short term injury -

I find the elliptical & crossramps much easier on my ankle than the treadmill.

Pilates, yoga ( no 1 footed stance ), upper body weight lifting, resistance bands, etc.

Try Tabata intervals on a rowing machine.

I recently strained a ligament in my ankle and kept pushing it on my cardio. As it got progressively worse, I finally faced the fact that I needed to rest it. I took 5 days off from cardio (and thought I would go nuts) and just concentrated on strength training at the gym. By day 6 it was well enough for me to start back on cardio, but only low impact stuff, so I am doing the arc trainer. I am hoping (4 weeks post injury) to be able to add back in running next week.

You really need to rest it if that's what the doctor says. If not, you could injure it even more and have a much longer recovery period.
