What to do about lunch meetings and poor menu choices

I just came from a large group lunch meeting that gave us a choice of a toasted club sandwhich (which was excellent) on white with mayo and homemade potato chips and a soft drink. The other choices were - wait - there were no other choices. I sort of expected this so I went light for breakfast and will eat right at supper.

Any other tricks to deal with this?

Not eating is not an option.

WOW that is crazy there were no other options. I would - wipe off some of the mayo (they usually put entirely too much on) and eat only half. Pass on the chips and soda and have water with lemon instead. (I would think water would be made available or point me to the nearest water fountain)

The best thing you can do is portion control here. Nix the chips and soft drink (bring a bottle of water) and log the sandwich. Life happens - best thing you can do is make good choices regarding what you can control and plan around it!

you could just get rid of the bread and mayo entirely and make the inside into a salad like thing. or take the top of the sandwich off?

That really is the best thing you can do. Portion control, plan for it, don't beat yourself up about it.

Maybe additionally when you're expecting this situation, take an apple with you to eat before the other food, so the portioning is easier.

I actually thought about doing this, but then I would have got the constant questioning about whether or not I was on the Atkins diet.

    No ideas for tricks here.

I just wanted to offer sympathies (not that it helps lol). It's annoying that's for sure.

The other thing that annoys me is mayo. I love mayo, however, I don't want it on everything and if I buy a sandwich in a shop for lunch when at work, why does it ALWAYS contain bloody mayonnaise???

That's why I have taken to making my own now and taking them into work for lunch. Now instead of having 400 calories for a tuna and cucumber sandwich (which contained mayo), I omit the mayo, weigh out the spread and tuna and end up with around 290 calories. That leaves me with a nice 110 extra calories for dinner :D

You know, if I don't have a specific dinner planned, and know I can eat lightly then, some of the time, I just eat the sandwich, and yes, half the chips. Part of the process is learning to deal with curve balls like this. Potato chips (especially homemade ones) are not evil, they just have a lot of calories for their weight. If I can learn to eat half of something yummy and leave the res on my plate, then yeah for me!

Oh yes, and have a quiet word with whoever set up the meeting, and ask if next time maybe they could have some healthier choices. Give them examples, otherwise they will look at you blankly.

    What everyone else said!

I'm also just surprised that in a meeting with multiple people they only had one type of sandwich? That seems odd, people just naturally have different preferences and such.

    Good luck!

In that case, I would eat 1/2 a sammich and 1/2 the chips. No biggie.

I used to have to plan lunches for the entire office. 20+ people! I picked the place, posted the menu and people had to sign up and write down what they wanted. They learned pretty fast how to order.

As another person said, that's sad whoever planned the lunch didn't offer options for people. Some people have certain dietary restrictions. Personally I *hate* mayo, it's disgusting and also one of the worst condiments for you, 2 tablespoons has 180 calories!...might as well stick a doughnut in your sandwich! They should have ordered the sandwich 'naked' no mayo/mustard/condiments and had them in the packets for people to add if they like.

After cutting out mayo, and switching it with mustard, I don't miss it, Actually, I get really bad stomach cramps if I mistakenly eat something with mayo in it.

EDIT: to answer your question, wipe the mayo out, or take the bread part with the mayo on it off and chuck it. If anybody asks what you're doing, just say, you don't eat mayo. No biggie.

I was a meeting of engineers. We don't have social skills and we dress poorly (LOL).
