Hey everyone!

I'm just wondering, does any one know the amount of calories you have to eat to put your body into starvation mode. Today I've eaten just under 600 calories, but haven't felt hungry - just been filling up on fruits and stuff - but now i'm worried my body might go into starvation mode if i don't eat more in future?

also, Please can you add me as a friend as i think i need a bit of support!

Thanks! xx

won't happen with one meal, maybe if you eat that low for a month or longer.

You are deff in starvation mode. You are hurting your organs by eating so few cals. Eat at least 1200 but make them good ones and not sweets.

    STOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If that is the case, then every single person on this earth is in starvation mode because we fast at night when we sleep.

    Good grief.

I wouldn't try to go into starvation mode. Your body will try to replace the missing protien in your diet from your muscle mass. Not the right way to shed weight.

    NO. OP please ignore this.

One day of calories that low won't hurt you and it takes weeks, if not months to start hurting your metabolisim (which is what people are meaning when they say you're in starvation mode)

But don't make it a habit. Eating that low in the long run will hurt you more than it will help you.

Seriously? Is there a private group formed to troll the forums and create starvation mode arguments in the forums ??

It's simple, EAT! Workout and be healthy. And if you don't know how much to eat go see a professional in your area.

You don't suddenly just go into this "starvation mode".

    Ruby,

It seems to me that everyone posting here is a bit snarky. I know what you are trying to ask. I also tend to stay under my calorie count for the day, especially when I work out a lot. The key is finding the right balance of nutrition for the day. Make sure you are filling your quota for protein, potassium, and vitamins AND most importantly WATER!!!. And contrary to what some have said on this page you can go into starvation mode fairly quickly. You will notice this if you are cutting calories and not losing any weight. Keep track of it over 4 weeks, if you are not dropping weight then you know your body is holding on to it. Do NOT be afraid to eat more as long as it is in your count!!! you will be surprised that you can drop weight while eating MORE!!

One day won't put your body into starvation mode so no, you're not definitely in starvation mode. If you keep going under 1200 (ish, there is no magic number, it's not a case of 1200 is safe but 1199 isn't) a day then yes, you will be sending your body into starvation mode. If today and the low calories was a one off then don't worry about it, I have days like that occasionally where I'm just not particularly hungry and only eat around 800-900 calories. The odd day like that isn't going to hurt you, at all. If you're doing it regularly then yes, you need to bring your calories up. Look at adding in mid morning and mid afternoon snacks if it'll help, pick higher calorie options like nuts, avocado, fruit juice etc. rather than just a piece of fruit which is so few calories. Aim for a minimum of 1200 a day.

aside from weight loss, you should eat more for over all health. where 1200 calories minimum came from, I'm not sure, but even at that level it's stated as just a minimum and if you exercise, you will slowly but surely start to feel the effects of a continued massive calorie deficit. your body will most likely lose muscle and water weight, not fat.

From what I've researched you would need to eat below 50% of your maintenance calories for a prolonged period of time. 1 meal, or 1 day will not do it.

One day, even a few days, of eating low won't put you in starvation mode, or everyone who's ever had a stomach flu would be in starvation mode.

One off day when you don't eat much isn't a problem. If you habitually eat 600 calories a day without medical supervision (ie, immediately post-op from weight loss surgery) you have disordered eating.

1200 is often touted at the magic number, but it depends on how much you have to lose. Generally speaking, if you have 75+ lbs to lose 2 lbs/week is ideal (1000 calorie less than your maintenance calories). If you have 40-75 lbs to lose 1.5 lbs/week is ideal (750 calorie deficit). If you have 25-40 lbs to lose 1 lbs/week is ideal (500 calories). If you have 15 -25 lbs to lose 0.5 to 1.0 lbs/week is ideal (500-250). If you have less than 15 lbs to lose 0.5 lbs/week is ideal (250).

If your calorie deficit is too large for the amount of body fat you have, you won't lose the way you want. You might drop the pounds, but you'll lose more muscle than you should. That's what happened to me last time I tried to lose weight and just tried to eat as little as I could to lose weight as fast as I could. http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/494091-i-just-don-t-care-anymore
