Do I need a woman's one or will a regular one work?
Chest strap or not?
Are there any good one's that are not that expensive?

I have a polar f6 that I bought years ago on new ebay for around $60 I think. It does have a pink watch but I don't think it matters if you get a men's or women's HRM bc you program it with your stats: height, weight, age, gender etc. Mine has a chest strap, and that's my preference as I've never used one w/o a chest strap.

Most HRM's let you set gender, so don't need a women's one per say.. only if you want one.

Chest strap is a must.. if not it won't be accurate.

Polar FT4 is about as cheap as you can get that is a quality monitor.. Currently retailing on amazon for 60 dollars. From there you can look at the Polar FT7, FT40 and FT60.. each have more bells and whistles then the Ft4, and thus go up in price accordingly.

    I urge you to wait.

You get what you pay for when it comes to HRM's.. buy cheap, and you'll most likely be replacing it with the one you should have bought in the first place... and spending twice as much.

Plus with it being that cheap, I doubt the calorie count on it is very good.

I would hate to waste the money on one that doesnt work well. It does say it displays calories burned. I just dont know when I will be able to afford over $50.00 on something just to see how many calories I burn.

Here's the thing.. nothing can directly tell you calories burned.. everything that claims to is just an estimation. Some estimations obviously are better than others.

In all reality you don't need an HRM... but they are a nice tool to have. I didn't buy mine until 4-5 months into my journey, and lost close to 15-20 pounds without.. and the rest I lost with the HRM.

if it helps, i got mine on ebay, its a polar f6, i paid about £25 ($35) for it.

search them, then change to newly listed, and you will find one that someone lists cheaply buy it now!

I was the same - an expensive HRM wasn't in our budget, so I did my research here and read all the reviews on Amazon for MFP users' favorites, and narrowed it down to a Polar FT4 or 7, or a New Balance N4. I started watching eBay auctions for new items of each, and after about a week I got a New Balance for just $26! Brand new in the box, works perfectly, and huge savings over the regular retail of $70. YOu might have to be patient with the auctions until you get one at your price. I got outbid a few times because I had a limit on how high I would go, but lucky after a week.

Good luck, I hope you can find one for a good price!

I just got a Polar FT7 at D!cks's Sporting Goods yesterday. I think they made a mistake in their computer system because it's sticker price was $109, but it rang up for $59.99.
