Depo Provera-birth control

I am wondering if there is anyone else out there who has used this form of birth control-the shot. I was on it for 3 years and recently got off of it this past september. I have been off of it for almost a year, we are trying to have a baby, with no luck, which is a seperate issue, but my question is: Has anyone else experienced a large amount of weight gain when they got OFF the shot? They told me that when you are on it, you can gain weight, but I never did. As soon as I stopped it, I gained about 50lbs! I am also wondering if there is anyone that lost the weight once the shot was out of their system? any info is appreciated!
Thanks, Nicole

Iwas on the depro shots also and gained about 25lbs over 2 years. I did not gain anymore once I got off. It affects each indiviual different. Good luck on both of your efforts.0

Another thing I wasn't told about is the fact that its highly recommended not to be on the shot for longer than two years because it depletes so much calcium from your bones it takes two years to recover from being on it for two years. even if you take calcium supplements. but honestly....I love being on the shot. I don't have the weight issues and I don't have a period the entire time I'm on it. but that's just me, my SIL had a bad experience too.0

I gained about 30 lbs on that damn depo...got off of it years ago, trying to get all that weight off now. I was 125 lbs for most of my teenage and early 20's, then got on depo and sky rocketed to 183 lbs at the most and I blame it mostly on the depo (and marriage lol).0

Yes the depo shot do make you gain weight.Well I gained like 100 pounds in about 4 to 5 years. The only good thing I liked about the depo is you have no period but I don't think it is healthy for you not to have a period. Some people I know have said that they actually lose weight on it but I SURE DIDN'T!!!!!!!0

I really appreciate all the input, I was considering giving it a go, as a long term thing but now have changed my mind. Thank you:flowerforyou:0

i can't blame all of my weight gain on the shot, but maybe some
i am happy you are off of it, it is an awful drug and a lot of doctors i have seen are reluctant to prescribe it0 -

i was 125 too!!! and when i hit 145 i realized it was time to fix things before i hit 150!0 -
I took the shot for 3 years....gained like 50 lbs. It's EVIL! I also developed a tumor on my ovary and am almost certain it had to be from that shot. I didn't gain anymore after getting off the shot but it took about a year of stopping before the weight started coming off.0

I was on the depo for 4 year snad never gained a pound. They took me off the depo and said I couldn't have kids. (After tons of testing.) Two months later I'm wondering why I'm so nausous all the time and why I just couldn't kick the stomach flu. My daughter was born march 16th. lol
When I went back on the depo I gained 50 lbs. in a YEAR. It was terrible. I just had the Mirana put in so hopefully that's better. Supposidly there's no weight gain related to it.0 -
I never gained weight while on Depo, but I was very active at the time. I did gain some weight after I went off it, but I attribute that to the fact that I wasn't as active as I was previously and still eating the same things. I have recently considered going back on Depo. I personally had no problems with it, but my daughter did, just not a weight issue.
Like everything else in life Every-Body handles foods and medications differently. What was bad/good for one is not bad/good for all.0 -
I was on it for 3 years... not only did I gain weight ( not sure how much of the 100lbs was due to lifestyle or depo) I was also miserable. I didn't smile for 3 years. It was so gradual I didn't notice the change in me until someone pointed it out. As soon as I got off of it the world seemed like such a beautiful place to live.
I know this isnt the same for everyone but please take a look at long term unhappiness on this shot... Not only did I drop weight faster GETTING OFF THIS SHOT SAVED MY LIFE.0 -
So, I was on depo for 3 months and I gained 60lbs. I got off of it immediately but it didn't clear my system right away. It was awful. It took my husband and I THREE years to get pregnant. But hey, at least we have our baby girl now. I definitely do not recommend Depo to ANYONE. My weight gain was 100% Depo related. I was a very athletic and fit girl at 175lbs (i was in amateur weight lifting competitions and was VERY fit). I jumped to 235lbs within 2.5 months. it was AWFUL. It messes with your hormones and your entire reproductive system. I ended up changing docs and my new doc said that she NEVER recommends it to her patients because SO many of them become infertile from that shot. I hope you have success with getting pregnant. Just remember, keep trying. Even if they say you are infertile, KEEP TRYING! I did and I now have a gorgeous 1 year old daughter. :bigsmile:0

very interesting that you mention this I was on it for 3 years - I now have osteoporosis - I did have Chemo and I was on Tamoxfen - but I wonder if the combo of all 3 did me in ????
Oh well - to answer your question I gained a couple of pounds on it0
