Advice for Running Shoes

I purchase a pair of shoes last week and experience soreness in my knees after running 11 miles yesterday. A shoe technican for another company suggest I return the shoe and try another pair. What would you do? Is knee soreness a common experience in running? Does the type of shoe really matter that much?

Could you give us a bit more context? How far were you running and how regularly *before* the 11 mile run?
Have you had knee pain before while running?
I know my running shop won't take shoes back if they've been worn outdoors unless there's something clearly structurally wrong with them. . But I'm not sure whether that's typical.0 -
Is 11 miles a regular run or a long run? If it was a regular run, then take them back. If it was a long run, then try a couple of regular runs before taking them back.
I know my shoes caused me a lot of grief when I first got them. It was probably a month before I was ok in them. I don't think that's normal though.0 -
I just bought some shoes yesterday. I haven't worn them outside yet. They won't let me return them if I do. I'm going to try them on the treadmill later this week. Right now I'm thinking about returning them because they are bothering my arches. He said they would help with added stability... but I think I want to go back to my last shoes. I've put 670 miles on them and they felt great from the time I put them on my feet. A running shoe should not have to be broken in. Something isn't right if you have pain and that's your regular run.0

Tough call. Did you buy them at a store or online? If at a store, did they look at your feet and watch you walk? You could try another pair if they allow it. Or you could try to stick with them, maybe alternating back and forth with your old shoes. Suddenly jumping into another pair of shoes could have been the problem. When I got inserts and custom orthodics, I was told to gradually build up to wearing them all the time.0

Only had the shoes 1 week and 3 use them 3 different times. Yesterday was my 11 mile long run and I felt knee pain immediately after my run. I run about 25 miles a week. The owner of the running store said I have 30 days to return the shoe. Maybe I should rotate the shoes and see what happens.
I recovered fairly quickly without medication but I would prefer to fix this problem asap.0 -

what kind of shoes are they? do you have a high arch, or flat feet, etc?
i have really high arches and all my problems with running went away once i went to a running shoe store where they showed me shoes that fit in with my type of foot. i put them on and haven't had one issue.
i wear brooks and LOVE them. have you tried going to get your gait checked? that might help. i would return them and go to a running store where they can check your gait and match you with shoes that will work with your feet.0 -
Yes, they type of shoe matters 100%!!! I was experiencing knee and hip pain no matter the distance, then I got fitted at a special running store and now I am pain free.0

Agreed!!!! The right running shoe should not really even be felt. Having the wrong arch can Kill you run!!! I did and it was too high causing all my pain. f they hurt, take them back.0 -
I think return the shoes, give your knees a big ol rest... find some relaxing stretches to do before and after your runs (for knee joints), and get the new shoes and try it out again
hope your knee feels better!

I had all sorts of knee pain, and then an injury running just 2-3 miles per day, 6 days a week. Shoes, stretching, training, age and body geometry differ for each of us. I would try another pair/brand, but if you have pain again, I would look closely at how you train. I finally went to a podiatrist and he recommended a shoe that works really well for me.
Good luck.0 -
It most certainly does. For starters I suggest using a different shoe store. The running store by me allows you to try your shoes for several weeks and you can return them if you don't like them. Obviously you must be able to articulate what the problem is. I was using a shoe that I believed fit me well and I was running 3 miles consistently in them. I then purchased a shoe after being professionally fitted and ran in it and noticed more comfort and my feet weren't as sore. Then next day I ran seven, in my old shoes and by mile 5.5 I was regretting it. I had blisters where the professional that sized me said they would be from wearing them. Now for most runs I wear my professionally fit shoe unless it's a shorter run or they are wet.
Good luck!0 -

I purchase Brooks Aderaline GTS 12 and they felt fine while running but the pain came afterwards. I will visit the running store tomorrow. Thanks for the tips!!0

Exchange my Brooks for a new pair of Asics GT 2170. I really like Asics shoes! Hopefully this work out!0

I just took my Asics GT2170's back. They seem like a good shoe but they don't work for my arch. I took them back to their other store where they let me run outside on the sidewalk. I tried Brooks and they felt good but I love my Asics Gel-Nimbus 13. I went with the same one's I've been running in....different color. I've never had green shoes before
They told me I need a "neutral" shoe.

I just got a pair of Asics a few weeks ago (*edit* Gel T2170s), and they have saved my knees and lower legs from awful pain after running/jumping/climbing, etc. I'd say the shoes matter... big time. The way your foot absorbs impact really does affect your knees.0

Ran 4 miles on the dreadmill last night and my Asics felt great. Got another run tonight. Keep my fingers cross.0
