Alcohol, cigarettes, junk food....pretty much all my vices are being given up for Lent.
  • Today, I am indulging in "Fat Tuesday" fashion! Already had a Paczki, going to have beer this afternoon!! Tomorrow, I will be giving up beer!! My love for this drink runs so deep, I am not sure I can do this. My Fiance says I can, and he is very supportive of me!!

No beer for 40 days!! Here we go....
  • I'm also giving up facebook. Waste of time and energy.... Vacationing in ARUBA in 18 days so will use that time for more exercise!!!!

Most years for Lent I give up watching football.

This year I think I'm going to try my hand at quiting Diet Mt Dew, but that never seems to end well.

I am fasting from sweets. This will be a challenge and will take a lot of prayer and help from God, but I know that with his guidance I will succeed.

You should define "sweets." Fruits are great for you, but are very sweet as well ;) You should say anything with sugar added to it so you don't deprive yourself of yummy fruit :D

I am giving up desserts and red meat. The desert part is what is hard.

Did it last year and I'm pretty sure I'm doing it again this year... gotta give up McDonald's (even the seemingly healthy options) Eventually I'll get to the point where it'll be all fast food in general, but baby steps first!

And I hardly drink them, but I'm giving up all sodas, too.

I'm giving up soda. Even though I'm only drinking diet soda at this point, it's still not very good for you. I'm also resolving to stop cursing and stop gossiping.
  • Wow . . . . . that's a great deal of time & I respect your motivation . . . I was having difficulty on deciding what to give up for lent and I hope you don't mind but I will commit to walking briskly 40 to 60 mins three times a week - minimjum - I can keep that commitment - not sure in the begining I could do more . . . . . . .Thank you!

Great reflection. I think along with "giving up" I will add my spiritual time back in to mornings. I've gotten into the habit of sleeping in, (4:30am instead of 3:45am :) and away from my time of prayer and reflection. Thanks for this post.

WHITE CARBS! (sugar, noodles, white bread etc...) I've already given up one of my bad habbits (soda) so this is the only logical next step!
  • Pasta which will be hard given that it is one of my main food groups. My parents are betting on how long before I cave :(
And I'm committing to eating my meals at the kitchen table instead of at the couch or in bed.
And sweets except the occassional jolly rancher.

I'm giving up pop. My one can a day has escalated to two a day & now my 14 year old has one every other day. The whole house is giving up pop!

I'm giving up cursing, and getting angry with my kids/wife. I've got the most amazing family, and it's gut wrenching sometimes when I get so angry at them. So, although this is an impossible task completely, my goal is to spend the next 40 days being the kinder gentler father/husband I'm supposed to be all along. Won't be easy.

Oh and chocolate. My turn-to snack. LOVE the dark stuff! Flavanoids, baby!!! This will suck.

    Bring on Lent.

I'm giving up wasting so much time on Facebook, and the internet in general. I'm going to commit to checking FB/MFP/e-mail once in the morning for no more than 10 minutes, and once at night for the same amount of time. I hope to be more productive, and to stop making the excuse of not having time for things. :-)

    ^^^^^ THISSSS.

i am definitely looking at giving up facebook. and profanity :blushing:

I think instead of giving up something I will take on more exercise and more accurate logging in my food diary.
I am going to BEAT THE BULGE!!!!!

    Yes, this.
I think "giving up" something puts you in a negative mindset and it becomes difficult to do.

In the past dozen years I've given up caffeine, nicotine and alcohol, all forever.
Congrats! That takes determination and hard work!
Why would I care about Lent?
If you don't care about Lent, why would you come to a topic on giving up something for Lent? Just to make sure we all know how awesome you are but how you don't care about Lent?

I'm still up in the air on what to give up or maybe add for Lent. I'm leaning towards adding something like exercising daily for Lent in hopes that I will get better with exercising and actually continue even after Lent. I'll post when I decide for sure what I'm doing...guess I better decide quickly!!

I am thinking of giving up snacking on treats people bring in at work. This adds up to alot of unnessary calories. Also thought about giving up candy.

this^ work is a bad influence on me as well, I'm going to be doing this as well. thank you for the idea!

I'm giving up soft drinks. I usually only have 1 diet mt. dew in the mornings but I've been wanting to give up them up for a while and even though I'm not catholic, I started giving something up every year for Lent when I was in college in Mobile Alabama (where Mardi Gras was originated). I'm hoping after 40 days of no soft drinks... I'll be off them for good!

I'm giving up snacking. Going to only eat breakfast, lunch and dinner. I enjoy snacking and so this will be a sacrific for me to do and will be hard!

This is not a good idea. You should eat every 2-3 hours to keep your metabolism burning....it's like fuel to your fire.

Meal frequency does not effect metabolism.
