Getting off Birth Control Side Effects

Has anyone recently gotten off birth control and seen a gain or loss in weight? I know since I got on it 4 months ago it has been TONS harder for me to lose weight. I'm stopping it now, because it makes me anxious and moody and I'm a very happy person in general and I can't stand the way the hormones are making me feel.
Just advice in general as to what to expect from coming off of it would be appreciated!
Thanks!

  • I went off for a month and didn't notice any changes.

Have you tried switching to a different brand that has less hormones?

I think most (not all) birth control side effects may cause weight gain, so will make it harder to lose weight.

Might I suggest what I did. I went from Chemical Birth Control to Natural Family Planning. One of the side effects not talked about much is that it can take a long time for your body to go back to it's normal state. (It took me 2 years after going off of it to conceive.) I have a friend that has a lot of information on it, and she has some great informational links. NFP is awesome and I've learned so much about my body. Since doing NFP and losing weight, my monthly comes every 30 to 34 days.
  • I was on birth control for about 9 years off and on - couldn't lose weight. at. all. I was always hungry, moody, anxious, bloated.

Went off about a year ago and never looked back. I was finally able to lose weight (with a healthier diet an exercise, too). And I feel normal again!

I'm sure everyone's experience is different, but I'm so glad I stopped taking it.

I agree NFP is a great way to go (but it's MUCH easier if you have a regular cycle and may take awhile post- birth control). I went off the pill in August of last year, and stopped nursing the same month. My body went pretty crazy! I bled almost non-stop for 3 months! Now my cycles are still irregular 6 months later! Makes me angry that I've messed up my body so much! Anyways as far as the weight loss, no changes after going off bc till I started diet and exercise. Good Luck! And make sure you use some non- horomonal form of bc, or you'll really struggle with weight loss (due to pregnancy!) lol

I've been doing NFP since 2007. It's awesome.

I'm on a pretty low dose of birth control and oh my god it makes life hell. I went off of it for a month in the summer and all of a sudden the fat just started melting off of me. Back on it now and while it is possible for me to slim down on it, it takes forever.
I have heard of people actually gaining weight when they go off of birth control, too, though. Your body reacts to hormonal changes in strange ways, sometimes the opposite of what you'd expect.

Thanks!! I'm on the lowest dose possible and I still hate it. I don't need to be on it anymore for birth control reasons... the guy I'm with is like 98% sterile. It would be really hard for us to get pregnant. And honestly if we somehow would...It definitely wouldn't be the end of the world. I'm hoping since I was on it for such a short amount of time, that it won't take my body too long to get back to normal.
  • I gained 40 punds last year after going off the pill - started dieting and adding running, joining a gym... nothing helped- I was still gaining! Unitl I started counting my calories and understanding my hormones and what was really going on... I have only lost 4 pounds since Jan 12th but it's a start! I never thought calorie counting was worth it but now I see it is! Once your hormones get back on track, you will see a diference... sometimes it takes longer for others. good luck!

I would love to come off birth control! I've gained 15lbs in the 2 years I've been on it! I'm worried about getting pregnant though. My husband and I don't want kids.
