I just heard a short piece on radio 4 (as part of Woman's Hour, if you want to iplayer it) about dieting vs activity for weight loss and a healthy life. It was ahead of a program apparently on at 9 pm next tues http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01cywtq
Here's the praecis :
The Truth About Exercise
Perhaps you started the new year with a resolution to lose weight by doing more exercise? But how much have you actually achieved? It's common for most of us to tell ourselves we should exercise more to lose weight. But it's also a common complaint that it's time consuming, it's boring, and really it just doesn't seem to work. For a new TV programme, the BBC's Michael Mosley set out to test the claims that exercise is good for you. In his investigation, he met with leading scientists and has come to a rather surprising conclusion: that we can get many of the benefits of exercise from just three minutes of intense activity a week - a far cry from the government recommended 150 minutes of moderate exercise and two session of muscle strengthening a week. So what is the truth about exercise? Can three minutes of exercise weekly really be enough? Is there really any benefit in spending hours in the gym each week? To discuss, I'm joined by Michael Mosley, and by leading sports scientist from Loughborough University, Professor I M Phittness.
Got to love the name!!!!!

I seem to remember seeing something on this before. 3 mins of intense activity e.g. sprinting has hard as you can possibly sprint has better results (inc weightloss) than 20 mins of normal jogging. Watched a prog on it. They set up two groups each doing one of the above at regular intervals, then after four weeks compared weightloss/general fitness. The group sprinting for just 3 mins lost more weight by miles. I had forgotten about that, so now I may give it a go!0
