wow, 7 extractions. that is quite alot. i dont know how i would cope with that.

    my biggest concerns are:
    - will it affect my speech?
    - how soon with i be able to have proper food?
    - will i be able to close my mouth after getting the braces?
    - how soon after having the braces fitted will the pain disappear?

    You need to chill, hun.

lol, i am just trying to ensure i make an informed decision, that's all.

probably if i was younger i would consider getting metal but at 32 years old, i dont feel comfy with that one.

i am planning to get the tooth coloured ceramic braces. has anyone else had this one? if so, how was it? i wasnt keen on getting metal but i understand the ceramics are a little big bigger than the standard metal ones.

Ceramics one are a pain to get off after treatment, the regular one took one try to pull off, the ceramic one, two pulls each time. Something to think about if you have sensitive teeth like me.

    - will it affect my speech? not really
    - how soon with i be able to have proper food? few days to a week
    - will i be able to close my mouth after getting the braces? yes
    - how soon after having the braces fitted will the pain disappear? depends on how thight it is, but 3-7 days.

Like I wrote, I had the ceramics one on top and metal ones at the bottom, the elastics for each bracket were transparent at first, but then I realized that any food that leaves colors will dye it and then you look funny until your next appointment, my ortho suggested wires, they attached it to each bracket and it did the elastic job without showing much.

Also, retainer, I managed to have one that looks like the invisalign products because i'm an admin. and it would have been a problem. I still wear my retainer 5 nights a week and it's been almost 3 years since I have completed the treatment.

And my treatment lasted 3 years, with four teeth removed, I was 26 at that time.

As for food: knife and fork are your friend, even to eat a hamburger, you can always carry the small brushes to clean in between the braces ( http://www.oralb.ca/products/oral-b-dentures-orthodontics.aspx ).

Also, wax is your friend, to protect the skin inside your mouth :)

sally, can i have your advice pls

    - I haven't had much of a problem with speech.

-I am still eating softer foods now but its only been a week but every day is getting better

I can and could close my mouth just fine with the braces.

It's not even that painful just take two tylenol before your appointment and you will be fine!

that is what i am doing too :-)
it is a pain having to brush in public bathroom though. i have only had my braces 3 days and i am rather surprised how quickly the discomfort is going away. the only issue i am having at the moment is the mess after i have eaten

I had braces for 4 years, I could never eat when I went for the wire changed because it was so tight and painful! :(
I used to suck digestive biscuits because I couldn't bite down on anything. I was so thin then but it wasn't healthy thin. :(
They told me 2 years minimum for mine but I knew my teeth were in a bad way... 6 extractions and my mouth is still full now and my wisdom teeth are trying to get through. :/

Many years ago when I got my braces, expanders, head gear etc my ortho gave me a great tip. As soon as I walked out of his office from getting things changed, I stuck a piece of Freedent gum in my mouth and started chewing. This really did help with the soreness! Prior to that I couldn't eat for a couple of days after changes. The Freedent gum is sugarless and won't stick to braces or dentures. Due to circumstances beyond my control, I never had retainers and teeth have shifted again. At almost 50, not sure if I want to try to restaighten or not. Still up in the air. Good luck!

I had braces for about 2yrs in grade 9. I remember pretty much eating whatever, once I got used to em.

I also remember pretty much never flossing cause it was such a chore, and when it came to the year afterwards, I only wore my retainer at night. it'd make my teeth pretty sore, but for the most part it still worked.

Regardless, it's nothing to really worry or care about. If you feel people are staring and judging you, the reality is nobody really cares. You're working to improve yourself, and in some cases it's surgery or a procedure that was needed.

Oh, I had my 2 baby canines ripped out, and they left holes so the larger 2 could fall through.
    My smiles almost perfect now.

Besides, some girls look super cute and innocent with braces.

tomorrow will be 7 weeks since i have been braced. after the initial fitting i only had tenderness for about 3 days. had my first adjustment last weekend and was only tender for about 2 days. luckily i didn't have to get any teeth pulled.
