The wrong way to lose weight

My friend at work has just started this new "cheaters diet" and she has lost 8 lbs and 2 inches in 3 days--I don't think that is healthy or smart but it is depressing for me because I have been working at being under my calorie goal and exercising but I have only lost 3 lbs. How do I not get discouraged watching her progress that is sooo much faster than mine?!?

remember that urs will stay off. you are actually changing ur mind and your body. good luck:) and good job so far!0

I'm not familiar with that diet, but that much loss in that short of a time is almost assured to be just water, no actual fat loss. And if she's doing something that she can't maintain forever, as soon as she stops she will gain the weight back since she hasn't learned to change her habits.
Do it the right way. Change your lifestyle. It's the only thing that can work in the long term.0 -
I don't know what the "cheater's diet" is. I fit is just a short term thing, then whatever she might gain it back, but also remember that everyone loses weight differently.0

Not sure what a "cheater's diet" is, but you have to remember every person lossing weight differently. Keep at it!0

I am not sure what the producer is called but she drinks a shake for breakfast and lunch plus takes a supplement and then eats a "regular" dinner0

i agree yours will stay off. hers will most likely come back (cant tell for sure without knowing what the diet is etc) and if it does she will probably end up with ever MORE! you are changing your whole mindset and lifestyle. it can be discouraging but it will ultimately lead to a healthier more energetic you!0

:flowerforyou: Because she is not learning to be healthy. Your learning a life style, she is cheating. Her weight will come back when she stops, yours is going to stay off. Hang in there. Be proud of yourself!!!0

" The Cheater’s Diet is based on eating healthy meals and snacks from Monday to Friday and then “cheating” from 9 a.m. on Saturday to 9 p.m. on Sunday night. In fact, the Cheater’s Diet not only includes normally forbidden foods for dieters, but actually requires them. “The Cheater’s Diet says you must cheat on weekends to stoke your metabolism,” "
Do you realy want to risk your health for temporary weight loss? Yes, it's temporary, it will all come back plus some. Do it the right way and have it for life.0 -
This is pretty much what I do anyway. It doesn't seem like that is a novel idea. I don't think that weight loss using a plan like this will always be temporary because you can do this in real life. It seems to me that the "cheater's diet" may be more sustainable than some of the limited calories ideas I've seen from others. It's calories in < calories out. She probably dropped a bunch of weight at the beginning because we all do that when we make an adjustment. Her weight loss will probably level off." I think that revving up your metabolism with cheating is a good idea. But losing weight too quickly is almost always guaranteed to not be FAT. To burn one pound of fat you have to burn 3500 extra calories. Simple math will show you that its not possible to lose FAT so quickly. Fat is what you want to lose, but if you lose muscle in the process then that will account for a loss in the scale too, but its not a good loss at all, and will actually slow down your metabolism, and be counter-productive in the end.
The RIGHT way to lose weight: calories in < calories out, as long as you are not starving yourself.
The BEST way to lose weight: same as above but with wholesome natural foods that provide your body with the nutrients it needs to survive. Think LONG TERM!0 -

I'm 55 years old and a new runner (9 months). I'll probably run my next half marathon at just under two hours.
The guy who won my age group in a recent half had a finishing time of 1:23:xx.
I'm not discouraged — in fact, I'm encouraged because I know that a guy my age can do a half in that kind of time.0 -
Just focus on you and your goals. It is so easy to get discouraged, but stay positive and focused. Honestly, that sounds like how I eat these days! I'm good most of the week, but definitely relax my diet on the weekends- I'm working to get better with that!0

I am happy that she is losing weight but I feel like I'm getting cheated because she is dropping weight without doing any work while i'm busting my butt to drop maybe 1 lbs per week--but after reading all these replies I'm feeling better that I'm making a lifestyle change and not just doing a crash diet that may or may not work in the long run. I don't want to lose 8 lbs in 3 days if its water weight and muscle. I want to by thin and HEALTHY!0 -

I fully agree ^
You are learning to change, and doing something that is more maintainable as a lifestyle! It is frustrating when we work so hard for so long only to have someone do better in less time. But focus on you, and think about how hard your working, you will reap the benefits of your hard work and dedication! I mean i don't think she'll lost long on this "cheaters" thing. So be proud of how much you've done, in the proper best way for your health and your wallet0 -

The cheater's diet seems completely normal. I mean, if its FORCING you to eat bad food on the weekends (like sugary foods) that's not GREAT...but the idea of "spiking" or "zig-zagging" your calories is pretty legit. In my first two weeks on MFP I lost 10 pounds and then the weight loss slowed down to about 2lbs per week. I eat anywhere from 1500-1900 calories every single day. If you want to know some things that YOU could do to speed up your weight loss....I took a look at your diary and it seems like you are getting WAY too little protein and hardly any fiber. The protein levels that MFP suggests should be the minimum you consume.0
