Dreaded Side Cramps

Why is it that sometimes when I run I get side cramps and sometimes I don't. Tonight I went out for a quick run following a workout in home and my sides were killing me. Also the run ended with a pounding headache. I am thinking its probably has something to do with not eating the right things today or something like that. I hope..
Thanks

My mom called them "stitches".
I used to get them swimming. Sometimes I would last 30 minutes before I got them and sometimes I would last only 10 and I couldn't go on.
I never get them anymore because I:
1. Learned how to breath properly while swimming - I think this may be the key.
2. I don't eat at least 2 hours before swimming.
So try those. Get someone who knows the technical side of running to teach you how to breath properly, and try not to eat too soon before you run.0
