Hello all,
I'm frustrated right now because I've had three weeks of weight gain in a row...
I've been exercising a lot and my eating has been pretty good. I've had people say that I have likely put on muscle but my clothes do not feel any looser and the scale just keeps creeping up. In 5 days the scale says I have gained 5 lbs.....
Any suggestions?? Before I throw in the towel??

How's your water intake? Make sure you're drinking the recommended amount per day. Also, watch your sodium intake. Sodium can cause water retention, causing an increase on the scale. Don't give up!0

Someone here posted this a while back and I LOVE it. I weigh 1x a week only and I take pictures and measurements every 2 weeks. I just weigh for tracking for another site i'm on, otherwise I wouldn't weight at all.

I would take a good hard look at what you are eating, I can't see your food diary so I can't tell. Eating "pretty good" might not be as good as you think.0

Dont throw in the towel, if u r doing everything correctly it should come off eventually! When i gain honestly its usually water or just need to take a good poo! Lol! Drink plenty of wAter! How are ur calories, maybe u need to come down or not eat back all ur calories from workout! Lower ur fats as well if they r not good fats like olive oil or nuts! Just some suggestions!0

Are you sure you've been logging correctly? Little bites whilst cooking, drinks are a killer, unlogged oil. That kind of thing. Or perhaps overestimating calories burned - MFP can give you an estimate but sometimes for me it can be over by quite a bit.0

I feel like I have said this everyday on here but it is such a reality for myself and alot of others. Womens cycles often cause them to gain lots of weight just before they start. This could possibly have something to do with it.0

Frustration is normal. You haven't found a way to violate the laws of physics (probably), so unless you're eating more than you think, or burning less than you think, then you've probably just collected some water. The body can not build 1 lb of muscle per day; it's pretty much impossible.
So, that leaves only two possibilities:
Measurements are off. Check that and get better at your record keeping, then alter your expectations or behavior.
Water retention. Accept it as a fact of life and working out, or only record your weight every week or so to avoid the "scale freak-out".0 -
Don't give up! If you give up you have no chance of success. I don't believe it's just about the weight loss, it's about healthy habits.
Keep going!!0 -
Stop eating so much.
Unless there's a medical issue, it's very hard to gain weight. Yes, you could be gaining weight due to muscle but that takes a lot of work and it's hard for women to put on muscle because they have a low level of testosterone.
My mother gained weight when she was in her 60's. She lost it all when they removed the tumor, though. (What's the smiley face for dark humor?)
Sorry, I'm in a mood…
Yes, if you're gaining weight it's probably 'cause your eating too many calories. Suggestion - lop a few hundred calories off your intake and see what happens.
I've lost weight twice - I dropped 95 pounds in 7 months when I started dieting and, to improve my running*, I dropped another 7 pounds in the first two weeks in January. Both times, my diet was simple - "Sit there, don't eat that."
Try it. See if it works.
*Each pound costs 2 seconds per mile. When you're running 13.1 or 26.2 miles, it adds up.0 -
Don't give up. Keep persevering. If you can, make your diary open. When I opened my diary it made me think twice about what I was eating as others could comment on it.
Also if you are estimating how much you have eaten or exercised, over estimate on what you eat and under estimate your exercise, even if you are over on your calories, it is better to log and to know as with the knowledge you can make the change.
Good luck with the journey, all here to help.0 -
Thanks everyone for all of the suggestions. I'll definitely keep a tighter track on my food intake. I think the main reason for my frustration last week was that I had worked out 5 out of 7 days and I still gained weight. I roller skated for 6 hours (roller derby) and had four 1 hour cardio sessions at the gym as well.
I do keep track of my measurements and haven't gone up or down.
Well, one day at a time...thanks for all the support!0 -
Make sure you are eating enough! You will not lose any weight if you are not eating your normal calorie intake either. Are you staying in your carb/fat/protein ratios? Are you getting in healthy carbs (fruits, veggies) versus sweets.0

Do you measure your food with a food scale? That can make a big difference.0

The scale finally budged...down 4.4 lbs this week0
