Anyone else have problems finding food to eat

I tend to be a somewhat picky eater. For most of mu life I was a meat and potatoes guy. Still am, but I have worked some veggies in as well. Problem is, I eat the same veggies every single day. California blend, Broccoli, Cauliflower, and Carrots. Thats it. I cant find other veggies I like. Also, I hear people talk about foods that are great so i try them and they are terrible. For instance: Cottage cheese, Almond butter, greek yogurt (or any yogurt for that matter), Quinoa, all these things I hear are good for you and people love them but I cant do it. I tried to just choke down some Greek Yogurt and I got like two bites into it and had to give up. Same with Cottage cheese. I just cant do it. Anyone else have this problem?

There are a lot of picky eaters here. I don't really understand it, but I know that you're not the only one.
Just please try stuff. And if you ask for suggestions for things to try, don't just shoot them down. That happens A LOT around these parts.
Life is much easier when you can just go to the store, buy whatever lovely things are in season, then go home and be creative with them! It's worth the investment in yourself to just try.

Try green beans, edamame, greens such as spinach.
Add a bit of crushed garlic to your veggies and saute them for taste!!! Just a few tips.0 -
Just keep trying new foods. Keep an open mind & you will find ones you like.
Re: veggies. Try different methods of cooking: roasting, grilling, steaming, stir frying. Texture & flavor does change. Some veggies are ruined by freezing them (green beans, celery, peppers). When I use frozen peppers, we're talking soup, not stir fry. You might find you like something raw, but hate it cooked. It happens. Oven roasting with oil & garlic is newer for me too. It really changes the flavor.
Not all greek yogurt is the same. Yoplait is nasty, it's chalky, blech! Maybe you like greek yogurt as "savory" and not sweet. It can be used in dips too.
Cottage cheese is a texture thing for a lot of people, you're not alone there. Blend it in smoothies, or use it in cooking. Protein pancakes are a suggestion.0 -

I guess its not really a problem perse. Im just trying to add a little variety to what I eat and the so called healthy foods are terrible.0 -

Your attitude is the root of "the problem". If you assume they are terrible, that's exactly what they'll be.0 -

This is very true! A lot of people on my FL know that I do not like veggies! At all! But one day a lady told me I will get worms in my colon if I don't eat veggies, I decided that day that I like them after all and I have been trying to get at least 1-2 servings of veggies a day since then.0 -
You mention you DO like broccoli, cauliflower and carrots but that you have tried other vegetables and don't like them. My question is -- what have you tried that you don't like and how was it prepared?
If we know what you have tried and didn't like perhaps people could suggest things you haven't tried. If we know how you prepared the things you didn't like perhaps people could suggest ways to prepare them that you would like more.
And actually I think that the second item may be the key. For example, I think that steamed or boiled brussels sprouts are gross, but pan fry them (or roast them) until they are brown and carmelized and add a splash of balsamic vinegar and they are delicious! You might feel that way too.
Another idea is to find different ways to make the things you already like. You like carrots -- have you tried carrot soup? Or stir frying sliced carrots with ginger? You like cauliflower -- have you tried mashing steamed cauliflower with potatoes to make low-cal mashed potatoes?
As someone who grew up in a household where veggies were something that were poured out a frozen food bag and heated in the microwave it is a bit weird to think of "doing things" to vegtables but you can get a shocking amount of variety by cooking them different ways and adding spices and flavorings.0 -
I kept all my favorite foods around, I just tweaked them. Like tacos with 96/4 ground sirloin, hard shells, reduced fat Mexican blend cheese, lots of slivered romaine, fresh tomatoes and chunky salsa. Also, spaghetti with extra lean ground sirloin, regular spaghetti, lots of fresh sauteed mushrooms and Heart Smart Prego sauce and shaved parmesan. Same thing with chili - I wouldn't dream of sullying my chili recipe with that rubbery, nasty ground turkey. Gross. I stick with the extra lean ground beef.
I eat lots more fish now, I like pan seared flounder with loads of seasoning and lemon with a side salad. I also make BBQ chicken breast served with a giant side of fresh mushrooms sauteed in a bit of real butter and Worcestshire sauce. They go really well together. I also enjoy a lighter version of Green bean casserole, with french cut frozen green beans and Healthy Request Cream of Mushroom. I even use the french fried onions, but I just put a bit on top and don't mix a bunch in.
Veggies are hard for me too, but I do like hummus on pita or Wasa crispbread and legumes count as 1 serving of veggies.
I keep the focus on trying to get "5 a day" fruit and/or veg but it's definitely easy to get burned out on the old broc, cauli and carrots. Especially in winter when fresh produce isn't that great. In the summer I love fresh yellow squash roasted in the oven with EVOO and spices, but it's gross right now.0 -

Agreed. When in doubt, roast your veggies. Game changer.
Try things more than once. When you change the way you eat, your tastes change over time.0 -
Some folks are just natural food-phobes. Then again, the problem might be HOW you are eating these new foods.
Don't be afraid to PLAY with your food. You'd be surprised at how often something that sounds strange can be really delicious. If you just tinker with it a bit.
For instance, it took me a good long time to get past the consistancy of yogurt at all. I found tossing in some granola really helped. I love coffee. I thought coffee flavored yogurt would be an instant favorite. Ugh. It's SO gross to me. I do very well with fruit flavors. Peach, mango, blackberry.
If you make quinoa in a rice cooker, you can add a little rice vinegar after it's done, as if you were making sushi rice. Then put the quinoa in the fridge to chill. When you have a simple salad, toss cold quinoa in for a high protein punch. Quinoa is such a tiny grain you won't taste much of a difference in your salad. Or put it in a wrap. Lettuce, quinoa, some dressing.
I love noodle bowls. But living in Las Vegas, there are several months out of the year where hot soup is just NOT an option. I read in a Bento cookbook that the very same noodles are great cold. It took me a bit of tweeking to figure out just HOW I like to eat them cold.0 -
I'm with you on the cottage cheese, but you should try quinoa cooked in broth and mixed with your veggies. Put a little lemon, grated cheese and olive oil over top, not bad.
You could try roasting different Vegetables it gives them a totally different taste. My family hate Green Beans with cherry tomatoes or Asparagus but if I roast them with some olive oil, salt, pepper and a little garlic powder they can't get enough. (Just use a little olive oil and salt.) Put them on a sheet pan and pour everything on top and mix with your hands. Roast 400 degrees for 20 min.
Spinach is great sauteed with garlic and a little olive oil or lemon. Peas and brussle sprouts can be cooked with a little onion and bacon bits.
Greek Yogurt I can only eat if I put a ton of Blueberries in it. You can use it instead of butter or sour cream on a potato or any where you would use sour cream.0 -
I grew up in a household where CORN was our vegetable seriously. When I got pregnant my husband forced me to eat vegetables I had a hard time eating them. Now my favorites are green beans, bell peppers all colors, carrots, cauliflower, carrots and salads with Avocado the best!0

Changing your diet to a healthier one doesn't happen in a day. It takes time to really find what you like. Stick with it and don't give up! Just be open to trying new things. Baby steps0

I'm a picky eater too! (maybe a bit less than you are) However, do you know that it takes about 20 times of tasting a food for your taste buds to change?
I forced myself to drink unsweetened tea for about a week and now I LOVE IT!
I hated cous cous and now I really enjoy it! I couldn't eat asparagus; but now I really enjoy it steamed!
I tell myself that my body NEEDS the nutrition and try to eat foods from every color and sometimes it doesn't taste great but I need to eat for nutrition and not just taste... that's what I do...
Ohhh and I also hide some veggies... like I don't like peppers, but I can put one on a subway sandwich and not notice it0 -
How you prepare food makes a HUGE difference. Also the amount of time you're willing to take to prepare them. If you're eating raw veggies plain, you may not care for them. Try making a veggie fried rice, with plenty of garlic and some low sodium soy sauce. Shoot for equal parts rice and veggies. Roast your veggies with seasonings, or boil them in broth (cauliflower is great this way). Or use a food processor to finely dice them and add them to soups, stews, casseroles, or mac & cheese. The other flavors will help mask the veggies, and the food processor removes the texture.0

Ah, picky eater. I was about to say, finding food isn't difficult at all. Usually it just appears as if from nowhere and jumps down your throat!0
-
what type of greek yogurt did you try? Hopefully not the plain one all by itself...it will be hard to swallow. I have tried several and discovered Dannon Oikos Nonfat Greek yogurt is the best....especially the honey on the bottom (make sure to stir up), the vanilla, the key lime, the blueberries on the bottom (stir up), and the black cherry (stir up). They taste like dessert. As for veggies, try putting them in a wrap. I use either lavash bread or whole wheat flatbread (can be found in deli section of grocery store) and put on lettuce (either baby spinach leaves, green leaf, or chopped romaine), chopped roma tomatoes, shredded carrots, black olives, sliced peppered turkey and a homemade creamy cilantro dressing that only has 43 calories for 1/4 cup. There are veggies in the dressing too, like jalapeños, tomatillos, green onions, garlic, and of course cilantro....but because you blend it up, you can't see it or really tell it's in there but for the wonderful flavor it gives the dressing.0

Find recipes that will help you incorporate some of the foods you don't like into foods you do like so you don't know you're eating them. I hate the texture of oatmeal. Hate it. But, I figured out how to make an oatmeal cookie that also has quinoa flour and flax meal. It is very yummy.
I never liked yogurt, but I do like Chobani and Oikos greek yogurt. I prefer Oikos and to me strawberry is the best of both brands. I don't like the texture of cooked quinoa but if I put a bit in soups, I don't even know it is there. I do like almond butter, but if you go into it expecting it to taste like peanut butter I can see that it might be a little shock.0 -

Im not assuming. If you actually read my original post you would see that I mentioned that I tried all of the foods I am talking about. But thanks anyway for weighing in with your condescension .0 -
Thanks to everyone for the ideas. I will keep trying different ways to make things and see what happens.0

Those are some healthy vegetables. Sounds like you've got a good thing going here As others have said, not really a problem.0 -
The grocery store is fully of food. I am sure some of it will taste good to you.
Try cooking foods in different ways (baked, steamed, grilled, etc) and with different spices.
So do I have problems finding food to eat? No - and I am allergic to milk AND have a gluten intolerance, so I have more of an excuse than many to have a hard time finding food.0 -
I hated cous cous and now I really enjoy it!
I love couscous! But it's just pasta, so there is no health reason to try to acquire a taste for it.0 -
Marinades are my bestest friends when it comes to making veggies more interesting.
Italian blend veg + lemon garlic marinade + chicken or fish + small serving of pasta + parmesan cheese.
Any of the oriental blends + chicken or fish + Teryaki or Thai or Sesame Ginger or Soy sauce marinades + rice.
Green beans and honey mustard... YUM.0 -
I don't like greek yogurt by itself either, so I add a little bit of stevia to it. It cuts out the bitter flavor, and you're left with a smooth and creamy yummy treat. I eat it just about every day now.0

Worms in your colon????? Holy SHEET, I would not have been able to keep a straight face if a woman said that to me! LMAO!0
