umm...this is something I just heard of and am interested in knowing more about it. Anyone mind explaining what exactly is the benefit of taking this. I know its not to be used instead of protein shake but rather with it but I need more info please.

  • Casein is a slow releasing protein powder often taken before bed to continue releasing protein into the system when you are asleep. It is now recomended that a mixture of whey protein isolates (fast absorbing protein) and Casein are taken after weight training so that again protein is released gradually for longer in the body.

Nutrisport 90+ is a good mixture of the two as is Dymatize 12-Hour.

It's a different form of protein that will digest slower and for some people, keep them fuller for a longer period of time. The supplement companies will want you to believe that you need to take casein at night to prevent catabolism during sleep. This is nonsense but the supplement itself is perfectly fine.

I use it to make fluff.

    Alan Aragon's take on it:

Is there an benefit to Casein powder vs protein powder (Isopure Natural) with Almond milk and peanut butter that would slow down absorption as well?

I doubt almond milk and peanut butter would slow down absorption to the point where it's comparable. Casein typically seems to take something like 6-8 hours to completely absorb.

More like 5-6 hours at most for it to fully digest. Usually it would be fully digested and in your bloodstream at around the 4 hour mark.

Also, yes, almond milk and peanut butter is not going to slow down the absorption. Someone else above had also mentioned that casein will keep you fully longer, this actually has more to do with a good amount of fiber that most supplement makers like to put into their blended protein powders as well as their casein powders.

In general, if one sticks with a quality blended protein, those are both the most economical and healthiest types of protein powders. Why? Because the more expensive pure whey isolates and hydro whey is only really effective for post-workout when your muscles needs a quick infusion of protein (isolates and hydro whey gets absorbed incredibly quickly), so your body will only use some of it and then the rest will just come out in your number 1s, thus I just typically stick with quality blended protein powders that contains isolates, concentrates, casein, milk proteins, and some of them have egg protein for both general nutrition/breakfast as well as post-workout.
