Hi All you MFPer's (kinda looks like perves - which, from some of the post I've read, is actually fitting LOL). I have a question about how this site calculates the Calories, Fat, etc. of items in the food lists. Now for the Brand Name items, I can understand that information is readily accessible; however, for the "generic" items... does each member have the ability to just add items to the list? If so, are they verified? Same with the Exercise / Calories burned.. where does that data come from? I understand this isn’t an exact science; but, I also want to make sure this is giving me a semi-accurate representation - otherwise kinda pointless?! LOL And of course, any other tips you have to share – please do!

            1) Eat at a moderate caloric deficit. 20% under TDEE is a reasonable starting place. Consume sufficient macro/micros and select mostly whole/nutrient dense foods when possible.
2) Exercise, ideally: lift weights as part of your exercise program.
3) Get rest
4) Repeat.
5) Don't try to micromanage all the meaningless *kitten* that doesn't matter.0 -
the entries with * in your search results are user entered, if they lack * they are from MFP.
User entries may be accurate or they may have inconsistencies... ie tuna with 0 protein.. any user entered item can be edited so you can use it with the correct info. If you "run the calc" on your summary at the end of the day your calories might not add up with your macro's due to incorrect entries. Like the hungry man breakfast that was listed at 70 grams of fiber, no carbs which was baloney.
Calorie burn estimates are based on your height, weight, age and the time you tell MFP that you did the workout. What particular formula? I dunno. If you have a Heart Rate Monitory (HRM) that you want to enter your burn for a workout from go ahead, the "calorie box" can be over-ridden with your numbers.
Log partial servings ie 1/2 cup when only option is 1 cup by logging 0.5 servings of 1 cup.
Don't get locked into entering breakfast only for breakfast, on the website at least you can change it, where you get to enter the food in the search box, right below that it says "or add favorites for... the meal you're looking for" you can change it to say "all meals" and log any food you've eaten under any meal for any other meal.0 -
The food was already covered. I will also say this: A heart rate monitor with a chest strap for accuracy will be your best friend if you work out. I discovered that MFP is too generous with estimated caloric burn, as are the machines (and mine even had a heart rate monitor with it, but still not accurate). Using a HRM that has the accuracy will be your best gage on your calories and help prevent you from hitting a plateau. Just my two cents0

Factoid of the day - Carrots originated in present day Afghanistan about 5000 years ago, probably originally as a purple or yellow root. :flowerforyou:0 -

I'm fascinated. I've never seen a white carrot and I had never seen purple carrots before. They are much prettier than the orange ones. Do they taste different?0 -
