Anyone in Denver go to a 24hr who might be willing to help a newbie with weights??
I just started going and I'm pretty nervous around all the people in the weight area who at least give the impression of knowing what their doing. Help would be mighty appreciated

I don't go to 24-hour Fitness but just wanted to say from one Denverite (southwest Denver/Lakewood area) to another

I used to do free weights all the time 20 years ago, but only recently got back into strength training...right now I do machines and a bootcamp class that is all bodyweight resistance...and I'm not brave enough for the weight room just yet
But I'm getting there.
Can you get a session with a personal trainer to help you set up a beginner's weight program?0 -
Yeah I got a couple session with a pt but they mainly focus on the machines, and I've heard better things about free weights. Might hae to just wing it

Ask them to show you weights! I used to go to the 24 in Lowry, and that I where I learned and got comfortable in the weight room. At the time, I liked the machines better but my trainer definitely asked what my preference was. If the trainer says they don't teach free weights... Request a new trainer! Have fun and definitely ask for copies of the sheets they write your exercises down on. When I look back at them now, (first I laugh) then I realize how FAR I've come.
Have fun

That's a bummer...you should be able to tell the trainer what you want to learn--like specifically, free weight exercises. Maybe ask for another appointment and be really specific about what you want?
I have also heard of a book/program called The New Rules of Lifting for Women that is supposed to teach women how to properly lift free weights--I am planning to check it out at the bookstore this weekend. Several of my MyFitnessPals have recommended it--maybe that would help?0 -
I live about an hour north of Denver

I need to start doing strength training and have also heard great things about The New Rules of Lifting for Women. I am about to order the book. They have it on Kindle but I heard it is hard to flip back and forth so the real book is better.
I have no clue where to start on using weights.0 -
I've been meaning to look into that book, but can't manage to afford it right now. I've heard good things about it too.0

Check out Starting Strength and 5x5 as well... honestly your best bet overall are compound exercises. There are tons of info on Bodybuilding.com and videos on YouTube on routines, form and more.0
