You need 6-8 glasses of water for hydration. Generally when ppl are not drinking water they are drinking high calorie sugary drinks which directly affects diet and weight loss. That is why water is the preffered drink. I lost 15lbs when I just stopped drinking soda last year.

Are they? Everyone I know drinks tea and coffee. I don't think I know anyone who drinks soda type things. I have family members who haven't drunk water in years and are perfectly healthy.

    what are they drinking?

Tea and coffee, as I said up there ^^^

Last time I checked, water was pretty much the main ingredient in both tea and coffee.

Of course. But I am talking about people constantly telling other to drink more WATER. I see it every day, there's bother thread on here about it right now.

Sorry. But I feel like you're argument is retarded. You're arguing for the sake of arguing. Not because you feel you're right. It's water for goodness sakes. Not arsenal.

Then why didn't you argue there rather than start another one. Another repeat thread. Are we surprised?

I think that is nit picking :)

Some will argue that caffeine is a diuretic, I don't believe that either. I need to urinate the same whether I drink 4 cups of water or 4 cups of coffee.

Quite true. Yet, we still see many people arguing that tea and coffee will dehydrate you, when such is not the case.

Interesting...so now liquids made up entirely of water dehydrate us... amazing the information that is out there.

    O hai. This again?

You need the equivalent of 8 cups of water a day on average, from any source. These sources can be pure water/tea/coffee/juice/soda/milk/fruit/veg etc. It does NOT have to be pure neat water!

As for tea/coffee being a diuretic, so many people just spout that word as a reason, without actually understanding what "diuretic" means.

    di·u·ret·ic (d-rtk)
    adj.
Tending to increase the discharge of urine.
    n.
A substance or drug that tends to increase the discharge of urine.

Neat water is also a diuretic. The diuretic effect of caffeine is far, far outweighed by the actual water in the tea/coffee. Also, regular consumers of caffeinated beverages will build up a tolerance to said effect, eventually reaching the point where caffeinated drinks provide practically the same amount of hydration as a cup of neat water will.

I had the worst habit of anyone I have ever heard. I drank I tiny bit of water when taking medicine every morning and that is all. But the worst part is all I drank otherwise was coffee and wine. Coffee every morning and wine once or twice a week. I did this for years and years.
I added a little more water during my training for 3 marathons and 2 1/2 marathons but only during the actual run.
I don't know that I feel so much better now that I have made an effort to drink at least 8 glasses a day but I'm pretty sure my body is less stressed in some way.

    alright

I never said there was a problem with drinking water. I drink quite a lot of it myself. I just want to know where the original statement of you NEED 8 glasses of WATER a day comes from, because I see people on here drinking like 3 times that in liquid because they don't count the tea/coffee/fruit juice or whatever they drink as water.
