What your opinion on this?
So in the mall today to buy some new pots and pans and while there I noticed an advertisement table for Barbizon with a girl about 20-25 years old sitting at the table. In front was a big advertisement saying "You could be the next discovered TWIGHLIGHT character just like Jake was!" and showed a picture of Jake in a Twighlight backdrop.
So while sitting on the bench waiting for my wife to cruise through Bath and Bodyworks, I listened as this girl tried coaxing young girls between the ages of 13-18 to fill out a questionaire and "stroking them" about how beautiful they were. All this without their parents being there.
Now if I got a call from them about my daughter and trying to sign her up for modeling school because they got information from her "unethically" IMO, I'd f***ing give them some serious sh** about how they are scamming these kids into thinking they were "picked" to be models. I could be wrong, but don't agents actually search out on their own for talent rather then just sit at a table and hope that signing up as many people as they can they will find someone out there who can actually make it?
Educate me on this if you have knowledge because personally I think it's preying on the naive.

dont really know the law..but i think its ok to solicit minors..but not ok to ask for personal info without parental permission. its like marketing to kids..its legal..but technically they cant go out and buy an M rated video game.
if it were me and i saw that i would have complained to the mall managment. i know they probably get kickbacks from these types of people, but still..i'd complain0 -
Hmmm I don't know. I'm sure at some point they would have to get parental permission, if they called the girls in for an interview.0

I agree with you. Back in the day, I wasn't even impressed with the agencies who scouted by walking at big events. I was scouted 3 different times, but my opinion is, if some agency truly wanted me, then they wouldn't have me go in and pay THEM to do a portfolio of ME, instead, they would pay ME to shoot photos for them and they seeked me out, so those who perch at a table in the mall is an even bigger scam, in my opinion.0

That's what I thought. People pay them to "teach them" to be models, do hair, makeup and take head shots? Do you know what the going rate is by any chance?

Thsi happened to my son and he went for it. Unfortunately we found out a few months later (and a couple thousand dollars ) what a scam it is.0

Yep. Modelling schools are generally scams, to a greater or lesser degree. Successful models are either scouted by agencies and get straight into work, or work freelance and do likewise.
Modelling schools basically teach people a load of nonsense about the modelling industry, and charge a fortune for it - plus they are looked down upon by most serious photographers.0 -
This also reminds me of a time I went back home to visit my family and saw my little sister age 11 or 12 at the time wearing combat boots, and decked out in camo, and telling me how she was joining the army. Now, I have the absolute, utmost respect for any and every serviceman/woman out there, but my sister had a recruiter talking to her at her middle school.0

suckers are born every minute, you can't feel sorry for people to fall for this BS0

If people want you're look, they will pay for the services. I've been offered loads of cash for stuff like wrestling, photo's (a lot of gay/bi websites funnily enough) and also modelling and extra's work for tv/movies. I've turned them all down but if they want you they WILL give cash to you, not the other way around. Ever.0

I would be very concerned that they were gathering info on minors without parents knowledge/permission.0

this is why i only model for GWCs on Craig's List :laugh:0

Being that I worked for Hollisters I can say that it's the managers job to go out and hunt down "models". Models are different from other workers (Cashiers, Stockers). They just stand in the front of the store wearing Hollister's clothing and greet customers. If you can fold a shirt, you can be a Hollister model. Now I was a stocker. I was tucked away in the back room hidden from the world until I needed to put clothes out. I could've been a model but I figured it was too boring to just stand there.0
