Good morning MFP buddies! I was just curious what is the worst food, nutrition, or fitness advice you've ever recieved? Doesn't matter the source, could be a friend, a doctor, a book, the television etc.

I remember a few years ago I was watching Oprah and she was doing a show about losing weight, she recommended that you spray windex on your uneaten food so you don't eat your left overs :| . That may seem reasonable to someone who can afford to give their entire audience a new mercedes, but spraying windex on my food is just not in my budget!

My cousin lost 70 pounds so i asked her about weight loss advice and her advice was to eat 1200 calories and start running. According to her, running was the only way to really lose weight.

Which now that I look at her it explains why she is "skinny fat"

The worst advice usually begins with some type of ultimatum. "you have to do this or _____ will happen"

I've learned that the hard line people are often the most inaccurate.

Fat-free diet (old) and whole wheat this, whole wheat that...cutting wheat and processed foods out of my daily diet has done me wonders.
  • The person who recommended I eat fat-free peanut butter. I bought it, took one bite, and nearly vomited. It was gross.

Some things are not meant to be fat-free and if you want to build muscle and burn fat, you need to consume good fats, etc.

hmm "take an ice bath, your body will burn calories trying to stay at the right temperature!"

orrr "eat half a tomato in the morning, then ice chips the rest of the day"

Eat a low fat diet and you will lose weight. Wrong! That mantra became popular in the late 1980s and 90s and people still have that mindset. Fat doesn't make you fat.

You couldn't pay me to eat fat free cheese, fat free salad dressing...those fake food products are loaded with sugar and sodium to make them somewhat palatable. Plus, they taste nasty and the ingredient list scares me!
  • All of the "diet plans" out there that are low fat/high carb, REGARDLESS of the source of the carbs. Yeah, that doesn't work for me and the majority of the overweight/obese population who are insulin resistent. The source of the carbs DO count! 100 calorie packs of cheezits are NOT the same as 100 calories from a banana!

The book, Skinny Bi**h was the worst collection of crappy food advice ever. They would promote being Vegan (as though the rest of us were evil meat eaters from hell) extreme "juicing" (nothing but juice for a week) and advise that you never eat until you're completely "ravenous". When you do eat, they preach health, but reccommended nothing but fake meat & dairy substitutes. No thank you. I'll be a meat eating, breakfast loving, water drinking skinny Bi**h instead ;-)

"Just eat like half the calories you usually do, so like around 800 or so and then only eat Smart Ones or Lean Cuisines for lunch and dinner. You'll totally lose weight." -this girl I know who lost 50 lbs this way and looked sickly but still had cellulite and a crappy body fat percentage and could barely do 5lb dumbbell curls. She has gained back about 30 of those lbs btw...and still can't do more than a 5lb dumbbell curl.

I gotta say, I like that advice. One of my biggest things I do for myself is throw away junk my kids don't eat so I'm not tempted to eat it. I'd rather throw away those junk calories than put them into my body and hang onto them for years, kwim? ;)

I heard some friends from work talk about losing weight and they had all kinds of crazy advice.

    1. eat nothing but watermelon for a week. It will make you feel full and you will lose a TON of weight.

    2. The lemonade diet. lemon juice cayenne and maple syrup. just drink that and nothing else for 10 days,

    3. the salt flush diet. you will be on the toilet every 5 minutes, but you lose lots of weight.

    4. eat anything you want all day and just dont eat at night.

Why are smart people so stupid about weight loss. lol

"Just use the really light weights and do tons of reps so you don't get bulky"

Also, if I'm eating at a restaurant and I know I'm full but keep picking at it, I usually put a ton of salt on the food. I don't like salt very much, so this stops me from eating food I don't need. The Windex thing is a similar concept, and it makes sense, but it is probably bad advice as it could be dangerous.. what if a child accidentally grabs some food off your plate, or you forget you sprayed it and eat some? Not so good.

A month ago a doctor told my wife that cardio is bad for you. She was asking him when she could start exercising again post surgery. He told her not to b/c cardio is bad. She is a personal trainer so she was like WTF!?! She is happily doing loads of cardio again. What planet is he on? I think his medical license should be revoked!

Sure he didn't mean cardio would be bad for her specifically? Maybe having something to do with the surgery she just underwent?

(if you've already played this scenario out, then I apologize for playing devil's advocate)

The worst advice I see usually says that the source of calories is really important.

In this case, an insulin resistant person may be better off with the Cheez-its since they don't have any sugar while the banana is loaded with sugar.

For people without diseases like that, it doesn't matter much where your calories come from. For the normal person, the primary difference between the banana and Cheez-its would be that the Cheez-its are high in sodium while the banana is high in potassium. As long as your micronutrient totals are OK, then that won't be a problem.

I could see how the Windex thing would work....but some people don't have the money to waste food like that! Just only put on your plate what you're going to eat!
Anyway, this girl I used to be friends with told me to eat less and less calories everyday. Like the first day eat 1000, the second day 900, the third 800 ect until you got to 100. She was like "you'll get used to it if you take it a step at a time." She did this herself and on top of it worked out for 2-3 hours a day. -__-
Pretty sure she had some type of eating disorder tbh.
  • You dont need ro lose weight. I like plump women..

well excuse me but i dont want the word "plump" anywhere near my name thank u very much
  • I've struggled with various ailments and illnesses over the past year and a half and am a notorious healthy eater. My father tells me constantly "All you need to do is go get yourself a big juicy cheesesteak…It'll cure everything." Uhh not so much, daddy-o!
