How many days do you exercise before taking a rest day? I've just started working out and I've been going every day for a week now. My muscles are KILLING me though and I'm thinking I need a rest. I'm also getting sick of the workouts even though I love them while I do them. So I'm going to rest today but want some ideas of what kind of workout schedule I should keep. Like how many days before a rest?

I think it depends on how often you were exercising before you started this lifestyle. I've always been pretty heathy and exercised at least 3 times a week for 30-45 minutes...now I'm up to about 2 hours a day 5-6 days a week. My one rest day is Sunday. If you're just starting out...I think it might help to excercise for 2 days, rest for one. Also...mix up you're ruitine. I do kickboxing, Krav Maga, running, weight training, yoga, and ballet all on different days...that way I never get bored.

I don't know about you but I do heavy weight training and cardio

But this was my schedule last week.

    Monday,Tuesday,Wednesday,Thursday, and Saturday

and I took Friday and Saturday off

This week I worked out yesterday and I am taking Today off

But will be in the gym hard Wednesday,Thursday, and Saturday

I am taking off Friday and Sunday

Then Back at it for Monday- Thursday and Saturday with Friday and Sunday off

My coworker/coach's schedule is Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday
    Off Wednesday and Sunday

Like I said that is intense weights with some cardio

I am so sore that I have to take a rest today. If I just did cardio I would take 1 day a week off probably- cause I wouldn't get *kitten* sore
  • Yeah, I'm just starting out after a LONG while. The two days one day off sounds more like what I should do right now. I also have LOTS of different exercise dvds that I can do. My husband has a total gym that I'd like to tone on as well.

I generally only have an hour to work out a night so I alternate cardio and strength training throughout the week and rest on Sundays and sometimes Friday's as well (if I plan on doing a long workout on Saturdays with cardio and strength). I do 45 min of elliptical three days and 15 min elliptical (to warm the muscles up) + 45 min strength with alternating emphasis three days (arms & abs one day, legs and abs another, mixing up the machines I use every time).

You definitely need to throw in a day of rest during the week to give your body time to heal. It also helps to mix things up so you don’t get burned out….

if you're feeling that sore, you're going to want to take about 2 rest days. I like the 5 day a week schedule of heavy cardio and 3 days a week of strength training. Then on the weekend I got swimming or biking to stay active, but it's less intense! Good luck!!!:wink:

How about every other day that way you get at least 4 days work out and three off. Or do as others are doing, alternate gym one day, run the next, day off start again

    Oooohh... Good question...

    I usually go -

Monday - Full Training Session at the gym 1hr 20mins ish
Tuesday - Legs Bums and Tums or Gym session
    Wednesday - Day off
Thursday - 20min Run outside followed by 1hr in the gym
    Friday - 40min Swimming

Sat and Sunday are my days off - Howver i sometimes go skating on sunday for a couple of hours

    :flowerforyou:
  • Ya I usually shoot for 5 days at 60 min, but don't beat myself up if I miss one...Your body will tell you if you have too much.

If you're working out all of your muscle groups when you workout, assuming that you're talking about weight training, then you should workout every other day to give your muscles time to recover. Don't forget to eat after your workout too.
