Hi-Difficult after 50. My appetite increased and my metabolism slowed down. Not a good combination. Trying to manage my calorie intake and exercise almost every day. They are many good exercise DVDs that really help shed the pounds.0

I have a few of them..lol... slim in 6 worked good for me before...but broke 2 bones in my ankle a year ago ,2 weeks after knee surgery and am not able to do the things I used too.Just bought a treadmill and am loving it,but just get really frustrated...0

Hi! I feel your pain! I'm 53, a heart attack survivor and I have never had to struggle this hard to make the healthy changes I HAVE to make in order to survive! I love food, love to eat out, love to cook and bake for my family, love a glass of wine or a margarita...on top of the calories, I also am required to limit salt/sodium and fats. I crave Big Macs so badly it isn't even funny!
But- If I don't make these changes, I may not survive the next heart attack- and there WILL be another if I keep taking my health for granted! So, I'd better buckle down and do what needs to be down, before I develop even more problems, like diabetes! That would be ALL I'd need! I need to lose about 55 to 60 lbs, and the idea of it taking me a year is very discouraging at times. But...I have to!0 -
HI ! I just joined today and I am 54 and 50 lbs overweight . just joined a gym today with my 25 yr old daughter ( she is trying to lose some baby fat ) I'm struggling to lose wt also . I lost over 100 lbs about 4 yrs ago and am creeping back up to that wt. so my advise is count them calories and do some kind of excersizing for at least 30 min a day. Eat the right foods and the wt really does come off . I just lost sight of it and went back to old habits. Eat lots of apples , you can eat as much as you want of them in between meals, with meals , they really help you not be as hungry . keep in touch and we;'ll see how each other does0

Hi, I turned 50 last fall. I have struggled w weight forever. I know now hard it is. I am trying to stay consistent this time around. Reading the posts really helps. I don't feel so alone when I see others continue to forge ahead one step at a time. You can do it. Just don't give up on you.0

I am 51 alos and it definetly takse longer to take off the pounds than to put them on. I have decided to concentrate on how my clothes feel rather than pounds. I log my food, walk at least 2 miles a day and if my clothes get looser but I didnt't lose any weight I'm okay with that. Hopefully with continued focus on what I eat and excersising every day the pounds will come off also.0

Yep, that's exactly where I am and why I'm here. I'm looking for some friends in their early 50s looking to lose some pesky pounds. Anyone in that situation is welcome to add me as a friend.0

I think too much emphasis on anything is not good-makes us lose sight of what we are trying to achieve. We all want to lose weight or get back in shape but I think it comes down to taking care of yourself. When you think about it, our body takes a lot of abuse and and as one person wrote, survived a heart attack. That was a warning and everyday we are given another chance.
Let's keep going.taking one day at a time and committing to doing one positive thing each day, whether that is eating better, walking, running, or looking in the mirror and telling yourself you can do it. Don't be negative, a lot of this battle is visual and we can all imagine and see ourselves with a healthier body. So, set a goal to do one positive thing tomorrow to help your body and yourself. I worked out today and watched what I ate.0 -
I love my treadmill as well, just bought an elliptical before Christmas and I love it too0

I can relate. I'm 54 next month and just can't get the scale to move. I do eat pretty healthy and make sure to exercise at least 30 min. per day. I find that I see changes in how my clothes fit and inch loss, but that darn scale is not my friend!0
-
Give up the scale I put duct tape around mine and put it in the closet. Ha
How your clothes fit is a better indicator of how you are doing. Keep it up!0 -

Just turned 50 and have been packing around way too much weight for too long. I started to walk and improve my eating habits in the summer of 2010, lost 40 lbs. Then took the winter off because my rosacea didn't like me out in the winter weather. Well I managed to gain back 25 lbs.
This year my daughter and I entered a fitness challenge at a local gym, and 7 weeks in I have managed to drop 10 lbs (and several inches). I do have to do most of the exercises in a modified format because of the aches and strains usually associated with someone of my age who hasn't been active. It is really great to have a buddy, to keep me accountable or give me kudos for the effort.
We are working out 60 minutes, 5 days a week and keeping a food diary (restricting calories to 500 less than BMR, for me that is 1400-1500 calories). I also watch the sodium and sugar. I am getting tired of always having to calculate calories when deciding what to eat for a meal (yup a big mac and fries is sooo easy) but it is also way too easy to put the weigh back on - and right now I can actually some muscle developing - very cool.

I'm 50 and have found that although age is working against me, a better mental attitude and perspective on life is giving me what I need to persevere and make it happen. It CAN be done - it will take patience, determination and self-control, but by our age, we should have developed these attributes. If not, there's no time like the present!0

Hi! I'm 51 and I need to lose 100 lbs. I've fought the fight for years, but I'm 73 days into quitting smoking and I've already gained 15 lbs that I couldn't afford to gain. So I've started eating right, and trying to work out everyday. I just bought a recumbent bike and its my new best friend. Hope to be up to riding my outdoor bike by the time spring gets here. I'm looking for friends who can encourage me and understand where I'm at. Feel free to add me as a friend.0

I'll turn 51 next month and I have resigned myself to losing 50 lbs over the course of 1 yr. That way I will not let myself get discouraged - this weight is coming off :drinker: !0

I'm 50 and trying to lose about 20 pounds. I have been trying to lose these same 20 pounds for the last 6 months. I lose 5 lbs and then gain it back and lose it again and so on and so on!! I am very good about calorie counting and controlling eating habits until around 4 pm and then it goes down hill!!! I exercise a lot! This weekend I ran 9 miles on Saturday and biked 26 miles on Sunday. I do kettle bell on Tuesday and Thursday and swim on Wednesday. I'm not sure what more I can do. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Also, feel free to add me as a friend0

I hurt my back, stopped walking, gained over 50 lbs, and now finding it hard to lose as well. You may friend me, it's great to have the accountability as well as the support. We can all do this0

I'm in my early 50's. I haven't had too much trouble but I take a quality soy supplement which I suspect does help with natural hormonal balance. I've lost 86 lbs in 12 months. (I've only been on this website for a short time.) Check out the link below. (No, I do not work for this company or profit by any recommendation.) I don't follow their diet but I do have one soy shake each morning with a healthy breakfast.

Hi Im turning 50 in August Im about 220 lbs over weight I am very discouraged and hoping to find encouragement and freinds as well as ideas on what to do how to stay motivated cuz this is stinking hard at this age I have along way to go0

It is so annoying hitting the 50's and the weight seems to crawl.
I turned 50 in January, I was complaining to my doctor last week about the lack of weight loss recently and he told me:
a) It was going to take me longer to loose my last 20 kg because I'm not the same person I was back in the 'fat' days and
b) I have to give myself time to adjust to the newer 34kg lighter me plus
c) I am now 50 and should not be so hard on myself
I know he is right but I am flying overseas in June and would love to drop at least 10kg before then but nothing is moving on the scales it is driving me nuts :sad:0 -
Definitely struggling! 53 years old, 5'3", 176 lbs. Seems when I turned 50 my body started to fall apart! Thyroid problems, lower lumbar back pain (minor at least) , blood pressure got worse and I have to lower my sodium intake. My job being shift work makes it difficult to stay on a routine of any kind.
I really could use some online friends so we can motivate and help each other. Please feel free to send me a friend request!0 -
Hell yes! I'm working out like crazy and finally, after 6 months of working out seriously and a little over a month of eating healthy and counting calories, etc., I'm starting to see a teeny difference in my body. I have not lost but 5 lbs but I have decided to stay off the scale except for maybe every 2 weeks, or once a month. Muscle weighs more than fat, yadda, yadda...I've heard this over and over and over til I'm blue in the face. I used to let it get me really down, but now, as long as my clothes are fitting somewhat loose, I will continue doing what I"m doing and stay off that damned scale! :bigsmile:0

Oh, I'm 51 and have had weight probs all my life. Funny, we all have the same story! At least we know we're not crazy! Good luck everyone!:drinker:0

I'm 54 and finished menopause several years ago. And, strangely, I'm having success losing weight and keeping it off for the first time since....well, since I did that damn MediFast plan back when Oprah raved about it and promptly gained it all back plus a few extra when I went back to real food. So maybe 1990?
I'm not to my goal yet but I'm confident I'll get there eventually. What I'm focusing on more are fitness gains and inches lost than the scale. While it's nice to see the scale weight go down, I was more excited to go down a pant size in January even though I had only lost 1# since my previous drop in pant size. 1# should not = a pant size but it did. I attribute to switching to lifting heavy weights/low reps instead of lighter weights/more reps.
I've also been focusing on repairing my metabolism. My entire life I could never eat as much as my thin friends. And this was always a huge frustration. There are a lot of tips throughout the MFP forums on how to do this. I've upped my NET calorie intake to my BMR and eat my exercise calories. But I don't sweat it if I don't eat them every day because I also zig-zag my calories shooting for a weekly target instead of a daily one. This allows me to "bank" calories to "spend" later in the week at social events, restaurant meals, or just because I can. It's wonderfully freeing and I really don't even feel like I'm dieting at all. In the last two weeks I've enjoyed a huge special Valentine's Day dinner out with wine, gourmet-style foods, and a dessert that was too die for, my husband's birthday with a special dinner and cake, pizza, ice cream, a good greasy burger at my favorite burger joint with about 1/4 of the french fries, and I still lost 2# and the pants I bought in January are already getting looser.
I don't think the eating more would be working so well if I wasn't exercising. I'm finding that a good mix of heavy lifting, HIIT (high intensity interval training) and just a day or two of steady-state cardio is a good combination for me. I'm focusing on improving my times, my intensity, increasing resistance, etc., so I'm not just doing the same thing all the time.
Fitness goals are important to me because just a few years ago I was virtually bed-ridden for a year with a bad back injury. After it healed, it took me months just to re-learn to walk with a normal gait and stand straight. And then a couple years where I could only do walking for exercise because anything else was too much strain on my back. But, gradually, I got to the point where I could go to fitness classes and the gym and just modify the exercises to protect my back. Now I don't even really have to do that because my core muscles are strong enough to support my back well. And I just started back to the gym and taking the classes in August so it hasn't been that long ago. I'm thrilled at the progress I've made in that time.
My goal is to never be incapacitated by a back injury again. It was awful. I suppose if I ever do get an injury again, I want to at least do it in a "blaze of glory", like doing something fun like skiing or hang-gliding (on my bucket list). Anyway, this experience has made the fitness goals far more important to me than the weight goal. I feared I would never be able to play with my dog, future grandchildren, dance with my husband, etc., ever again and it was horrible. I figure if I exercise in a way to continually increase my fitness level, eat healthy about 80-90% of the time and enjoy my splurges the other times mostly eating foods that will provide my body with decent nutrition to fuel my workouts, and have fun in the process, the weight will go in the direction I want it to as well. I'm currently training to do a 200-mile, 2-day bike event this summer and I'm having a blast.
I hope I don't sound like I'm bragging. I'm not trying to do that. I'm just so excited about the changes I've been making in my life and the way it is effecting every other area of my life. My husband and I are doing ballroom dancing classes. I just got cast in my first play since high school. I'm doing things that I never imagined I would have the energy to do or even the guts to do because I used to be too self-conscious (mainly due to my weight and my lack of fitness). It's wonderful. I guess I'm out to prove that the 50's are really the new 30's, LOL. Well, that might be a stretch but I do know that I'm more energetic and feel younger now than I did in my 40's.
Oh, I should mention that I haven't lost all my pounds just since starting my exercising in August, just 23# of it, but I'm down 2 pant sizes and 1 shirt size in that time. As long as my clothing size goes down, I really don't care what the scale says anymore.
You can do it, Ladies! Find things to do that make it fun and you won't care if it takes a year or two or more to reach your goal weight because you're having a great time on the journey. Fun ways to exercise, fun goals to shoot for, fun new ways of eating. it's all good. Enjoy!0 -

Yes. Me too! I lost 50 pounds three years ago, and it was sure a lot easier then. A mere three years later, and a regain of 20 pounds, I can't seem to get the scale to budge this time.
Six weeks, I have been working out on the Elliptical for 30 minutes every morning. I have only missed one day, I think. I also walk my dogs for 45 minutes to an hour every afternoon. I eat sort of a South Beach-ish plan, and try to stick to my 1200 calorie limit without eating back exercise calories.
I am down a mere 6 pounds since I started, with NONE of it being in the last two weeks. I have hit a plateau already! Lord, it is tough this time.0
