30 Day Shred

Level 1 day 1 complete ... however ... I use a heart rate monitor and I've only burned 189 calories. I suppose because it's only 20 minutes plus warm up and cool down this isn't bad. Of those of you who have done / are doing 30DS who uses a HRM and how many calories do you burn?
I started working out seriously on the 3rd of January this year - I work out 5 days a week and have 2 rest days. I have stuck to this pretty religiously, maybe taking 5 extra days rest up to today. I alternated between 45 minutes Kettlenetics (kettlebell workout with a 5kgs / 11lbs weight) and a 1 hour aerobics workout that included core, abs and conditioning in addition to cardio. So, I'm not unfit. I did 2 days of JM's Banish Fat Boost Metabolism last week and burnt 489 calories and 518 calories respectively.
My plan was to alternate workouts with 1 day 30DS and 1 day BFBM plus my rest days but I'm wondering if I should just do the 30DS 5 days a week with my 2 rest days. I need my rest days to catch up on house chores, give my muscles time to repair and be alive to chase after my 2 year old son in the day! LOL
What do you think? HELP!

I do 30 day shred everyday and burn about 220 - 270 calories and I'm 5'4 and 127 lbs. I find if I do a more intense workout beforehand I burn more because my heart is already elevated. Depends on your height and weight as well as how much effort you're putting into it. If you takes those 5 second rests during the video then it's going to affect how much you burn. I try to push hard because it really is only 20 minutes and completely do-able for everyone who does it.0

Oh yeah and I used 4 lb hand weights and those results are from level one right now. I haven't moved on yet.0

About the same if I'm not going max effort and don't stop even though they do in between exercises... I literally will do jumping jacks in between until I hit the ground and before she even says "hit it"... burns an extra few... have had up to 300 doing this.0

The 189 is what it said when i researched calories burned, but i put it under circuit trainin and it says i burnt a bit more. However i feel like i burnt a million cals with all her workouts!0

I dont have a hrm tho, plan on it being my next purchase tho...0

Hi - I had been selecting 'circuit training' in the MFP calculator for 30DS...but always had a sneaking suspicion the cals burned were on the high side
I'm using 30DS as a longer work out - ie 2 workouts in a row.
I wore my new HRM for Level 2 + 3 today...and burned a grand total of 290.... which is a darn sight lower than the 360 suggested in 'circuit training'....another example of why using an HRM is helpful...if possible.
Regardless of calorie burn, I am definitely toning up and increasing arm/ab strenghth, so I am fine with this...
I generally run 45 mins on alternate days...0 -
My calories burned on level 1 varied between 186 & 227. It really depended on how much effort I put into it... towards the end of the 10 days I spent on level 1, I was giving it all I had. Sometimes, though, my HRM will show 00 for heart rate or go to some ridiculously low # like 46 for a few seconds so that does affect the overall reading. I just did day 7, level 2 today, and my range of cals burned for level 2 has been 208-232. To get to the point, 189 doesn't sound too inaccurate - it just depends on how you're doing it!0

Thx for the detail Maryrr88.
My HRM is new....like yours, it sometimes reads ridiculously low during the work outs....and it loses signal when I'm doing jumping jacks or anything with arms raised ....or push ups or planks.....
And I am mainly doing the harder versions of the exercises....
Perhaps I have a dud? It's a Suunto M2
It seems to work ok when running....0 -
The calorie burn sounds about right to me....I am 5'4", 149 lbs. I run at least 3 days a week and am currently training for a 10 mile race in April...so my fitness level is good, but not great. I have done Ripped in 30 and my calorie burn was about the same as yours with my HRM. Good luck to you!0

I just finished my 30DS. LOVE that workout so much. I have a MIO HRM and it always read in between 200-240 cals burnt (for Level 1-3). I used 5lb dumbbells and I'm 5'2, 147lbs.
I lost 7 lbs doing that DVD and I haven't taken my measurements yet but everyone has been telling me I look tiny, a word I never would ever use to describe myself!! AND! I went to try on my wedding dress because it just got in to the store after 4 months and I lost 2 dress sizes!! I LOVE Jillian! She's amazing!!0 -
I burn about 198 to 220 depending on the day and the energy I put in.0

I would suggest focusing less on the number of calories burned and more on maintaining your heart rate in good training zone. Those HRMs use a very simple algorithm for calculating the number of calories so they are not "exact" by any means. As you become more fit, your body becomes more efficient and therefore needs less calories to perform. Focus on eating a good diet and drinking plenty of water while maintaining a good training heart rate and you will see results!0
