Is it true?

I was told when I started to get into shape.. that the faster a person loses weight.. the faster they gain it back.. Is that true? I lost 3 lbs in like 2 weeks.. and my sister said it sounded unhealthy. I haven't been starving myself or anything... I've just been 3 times more active then usual... Not sure what to think.

Here's what you need to take away: Anything you do to lose weight -- the loss won't last if you don't keep doing what you did to get there. So transition into a healthy LIFESTYLE. Don't go on a *diet.*
People who lose weight really fast are usually (not always) just dieting, and not doing something sustainable. That's a large reason why the tend to gain that weight right back.
Get your calories and nutrient ratios in check and be active. Not only is this healthy, but it's a change in your lifestyle that should last as long as you want to be healthy. Fine tune your exercise and nutrition toward certain goals, but make sure what you do is a complete lifestyle change that you can stick with the rest of the foreseeable future.
I don't think 1lb a week is unhealthy.0 -
No, it's not the speed of the weight loss itself that creates the problem.
People that lose weight fast are typically on "crash" diets that don't teach them anything about how to maintain their weight. After they're off the crash diet, they go back do doing whatever they were doing before, so they get just as fat as they were before.0 -
3 lbs in 2 weeks sounds perfectly reasonable... not sure what your sister is on about!!!0

^This!! Well said0 -
3 lbs in the first 2 weeks probably isn't too much to worry about. For me a bit came off quickly then it taperd down to about a pound a week (except for a couple weekends where I ate out). Through my hubby's work we have online lifestyle improvement programs through Web MD and weight loss goals go from .5 lb to 2 lb loss/week. You seem to be within a good loss range. And like others posted, it's more staying dedicated to the life change than how quickly you get rid of the weight.0

Been on this journey for 32 months and have been averaging 1-2 lbs. weightloss a week.. That is a very sustainable weight loss and it sounds like that is what you are doing..... Congrats and keep it up......0

That sounds perfectly fine. Also remember that you may lose a lot more at once when you start out. Plus there may the times when the scale doesn't move and then you suddenly drop several pounds at once.0

Thank you guys You give sound advice. I've been wanting to eat better as a lifestyle because of diabetes running in my family, not to just lose weight. But what you all have said makes sense.0

Healthy weight loss is up to 2 pounds/week generally speaking. Losing 3 pounds in two weeks is perfectly fine.0

I just have to say, people like you who have lost large amounts of weight truly impress me. I cannot imagine what you've been through. Congrats on a tremendous accomplishment.0 -
I think it's a few different factors. The faster you lose weight, the more muscle you lose along with the fat. Muscle is the good stuff that burns the calories. You want to try and keep it so that you can eat more calories when you're at your goal weight.
Another thing is I think people deprive themselves of things they want so when they hit their goal they think they can go crazy eating that stuff again.
And they probably never learn how to eat right in the first place because they're on a crash diet.
I am all about lifestyle changes I want to try and improve myself day by day, but I also plan to eat and exercise this way forever.0 -
you need to maintain the weight loss by continuing to exercise and eat right. the fast gaining is caused by not letting the body get used to it's new weight. it will want to go back to what it's used to so you have to be diligent. 1-2 pounds a week is a good pace.0

I know what you mean by depriving... But I have one day a week that I let myself cheat a little.. not to go crazy.0
