Specialty Stores for Runners?

Anyone have suggestions for good running specialty stores?

I recently replaced my New Balance shoes with Skechers Cross-Training shoes, and I really do NOT like them for jogging. They are heavy and I feel like they're not giving me the proper support (have never had back pain while jogging - now suddenly I do).

Would love to find a place that could actually fit me properly for running shoes (and I can keep my cross-trainers for non-impact training, weight lifting, etc.).

Thanks in advance!

Or maybe they don't exis? O.o

I have sports stores nearby - Sports Authority, D.ick's, etc... but I'm not sure they have the capability to truly help someone select the right kind of running shoes?

Note* - I live near Chicago, IL

Well, it might be easier if we knew where you are. I go to The Running Room but that is a Canadian chain. My nearest one is about 5 hours away. I don't make special trips but I do plan a stop there everytime I travel. By now I pretty much know what I am looking for anyway.

  • My nearest one is about 3 hours away, but it's wonderful. They watch you run on a treadmill and then tell you what type of shoes would be best for your body. It's amazing, definitely find a running store!

It really depends on where you live. Where I live, we have a store called the Track Shack that specializes in all things running. They watch how you walk, measure your feet and then pick out the best shoe and insole (if needed) for you.

I have ASICS - you can get them all over the place. I got mine at "the running room" . I think they have those stores in Canada and US

Tell us where you are, stores like you're looking for do exist...don't got to d*i*c*k's or Sports Authority (their employees aren't trained like the ones in specialty stores). We have a great triathelon store close to my town and once I got fitted there I knew what I needed and could shop at the more affordable stores or online.

where about are you in the world? road runner is a great chain (was just there today) - though i would also ask a local personal trainer if you know one; they might have the best recommendation.

Depends on where you are. In Dallas I like Run-On-Sports, Luke's Locker & The Runner in Arlington, TX.

The 2 stores that I know of that do that are "Fleet Feet" which I believe to be an national chain. The second is "**** Pond" which might just be in the Chicagoland area (there are 3 here), but I am not completely sure about that one. But both places are great and fitting you for the right kind of running shoe. Hope this helps!!!

Uh oh - that "Pond" store got bleeped. I am from the NW Suburbs of Chicago, though...hopefully I can find one of these nearby.

Perfect! Found a D.i.c.k. Pond Athletics store in the city where I work! There's a Fleet Feet not too far, too. Thanks!
