Craigslist is a great spot but make sure you consult with or bring someone who knows bikes, a 10 year old bike can be amazing if it has good components. You won't find dual suspension for that price, but definitely some great used hard tails. I would recommend starting with a hard tail anyway. Make sure you go to a bike shop and get it properly sized for you!0

My husband bought his Trek about 6 years ago for 4 or 500 and he loves it. I have no idea what model or anything but, he has been very happy with the brand and make of it.0

Some local bike shops sell used bikes....see if you can find one that does rentals. You may be able to get a premium bike at a steep discount. As long as they have a great on-site mechanic, the bike should be in good shape.0
