It has been one of those things to check of my list...I never did it when I could actually run lol and I cant get it out of my head..I really really want to do this, but I know I cant run..I still have a long way until I can even jog..so I would like to start off by walking a 5K..since I know nothing about marathons I need some input please...

  • you can walk.. I'd suggest choosing a large 5k or one that has a walker category to make sure they don't shut down the finish on you.

(My first VERY small 5k shut down the time clock before the all of the walkers finished and they were all very upset.. I was kind of btwn the runners & walkers b/c I'm a slow runner & I saw them getting ready to shut it off, but it was still on when I finished. only about 50 entries & awful weather that day)

I'd say every 5K that I've been in has had walkers, especially the mid-size to large charity races, where people involved in the charity will enter and walk because they are not runners. Don't worry, you'll have company, and it will be a very satisfying feeling (but be careful, you might enjoy it so much you'll start training to run your next one
  • i hope you have a great time!

It's also fine to do a combination. Walk a bit, jog a bit, walk a bit. A lot of people will probably be doing this.

No shame in walking. Whether a little or the whole thing! You'll discover either way...5K's can be addictive! Good luck and have fun!
  • Many have the option to walk or run however, some start the walking group first. You can check out www.active.com to find a walk near you. I did my first 5k last year for MADD (Mother's Against Drunk Driving) and there was a great mix of walkers, runners, joggers, people with dogs and others with strollers.
