asthma interfering and frustrating

Four and a half years ago, I completed my first and only half marathon as a fairly new runner with a history of being a non-athlete. I was very proud of myself and looking forward to continuing to train and improve. Then I was diagnosed with asthma. I did a team relay race and couldn't ignore my asthma. As of last summer, I struggled to run 3 miles. Currently, I have had a slight cold with congestion which has stirred up an irritated asthma cough. Put my exercise on hold for about two weeks. Increased my use of inhalers. Just did a basic workout yesterday but am doing elliptical type exercise and haven't run since last Fall. I know I can continue to exercise, but I am disappointed at going backwards with running goals instead of improving. And I have gained 6 lbs since five months ago. I still have a healthy BMI and my MD reports my labs are all great. When I started MFitnessPal with just counting calories, I dropped about 12 lbs and now am gaining it back. I guess I am just frustrated with the difficulty. Has anyone else dealt with something similar?

  • Hi Lucrecia,

yes, I am experiencing something similar. I was diagnosed with asthma 4 years ago (well into adulthood) and since then I have been struggling with exercise, even when I use my meds! Some days I can hardly walk without being out of breath and this is with a diagnosis of "mild asthma"!

I have been wanting to loose weight so thought I'd star running. I tried three times, and every time I developed something like a bronchitis and coughed and coughed for weeks!

I completely understand your frustration! I try to walk a lot, do some hiking, bicycling and that all seems to work. Running: no

All I can say is keep on trucking!!

    Good luck!
