Ideas Needed? Don't want to upset the neighbours!

Hi all, I'm new to MFP and am looking for any ideas for home fat burning exercises that don't disturb my neighbours?

My problem is that I live in a flat/apartment, I would love to exercise at home but jumping around in my living room is too noisy and disturbing for the neighbours that live under me. I have a WII and numerous DVD's but all include some form of jumping around.

Any surgestions for fat burning without the banging on the floor?

For certain activities you could go barefoot... that would dull the noise. Otherwise, try working in a carpeted area... that will also keep things a little quieter.

There are a lot of ways you can alter the "jumping" moves to where you don't actually leave the floor and still get the benefit of the workout. At least that's what Chalene Johnson tells people on TurboJam

If you can afford a TRX, that's a good way. Also, look at some ballet exercise videos.
  • I'm in the same boat. I live in an apartment with neighbors below me, who have a 2 month old baby to go with it, so making noise for me wasn't really an option. My apartment is carpeted and even with my shoes off I tend to make a lot of noise. My solution works out perfectly for me. I went to the store picked up some stationary pedals. (Really cheap, $25 at walmart) and a Shake Weight (don't judge it really works). What I do is when I'm at home either playing video games or watching TV I sit on a chair from my dining area and pedal the entire time. If you sit/pedal for 3 hours even doing a super light effort thats 180 minutes of exercise that burns roughly 395 calories. For an added arm work out I do my shake weight during the commercial break.

I love it, because I still get to play video games or watch TV without feeling guilty.

Oh, and as for the Wii, I use mine and do Wii Games and do the boxing one, or tennis. They work your abs and arms really well without making to stomp around too much!

    Happy Weight Loss!

this is a pic of the pedals/stationary bike I use

Thank you, your surgestion of the carpeted area has just reminded me of some sponge/rubber matting that i saw in a fitness shop, i'm sure this is used for under gym equipment but i could probably get a small enough piece for my livingroom.

If you look on ebay for rubber interlocking mats you will find various options, they help a lot :)

Maybe workout when you know they wont be home... do they work while your home? Maybe just go talk to them, and explane it to them. Maybe they can help with a sulition. Theres always a way to work something out. Expecally being neighbors in such close quarters. Good Luck!

Zumba is a great exercise, as well as any other type of dancing, and you wouldn't be jumping or banging around on the floor!

I bought a yoga mat, use barefeet, and try to stay on front pads of my feet. For a person 200# lbs, I actually don't make any noise at all...even when I am doing my couch to 5k in the living room. The elephant child above me though is an entirely different story. He weighs maybe 90 lbs, but I swear that he is made out of 500# bricks. Sometimes my pictures shake from him jumping from the couch to the floor!

If you are in an apartment chances are there will be a stairwell that isn't frequently used. You could do high intensity interval training (HIIT) by running up the stairs for 30 seconds and then slowly walking down to recover for a minute and then racing back up again. If you google HIIT you can find better explanations to ensure it is impactful. Try doing this for 10 - 15 minutes ... things like squats, lunges, push ups or planks will also be relatively quiet done at home. Good luck!

How about walking videos? You can still get a good work out but your not jumping around.
  • Thanks to all of you, really useful ideas coming in. This is my first post and the start of a long road ahead, i'm greatfull for the help and support. I think i might just make some progress on my fitness and weight loss plan this time.
(especially as the friends on here can't come round with wine and choc's!)

well, I'm kinda in the same boat so this is what I do

I have been donated a stationary bike which I absolutely love. I use it often for my cardio. Strength training also (pushups, squats, dumbell workouts) are all done without disturbing the neighbors. You said you like/want to jump which I dont think will be a big problem if you got some carpet in the house. THe only person you have to worry about is the guy directly below you, so you can also ask him or try to figure out when he's not home and try to plan your workout around his/her hours
