I am new to myfitnesspal.com. My name is Karen. I found fitness pal and decided to use it to first lose weight and second to improve my overall fitness and health. I need a lot of motivation because right now I am gaining weight at a slow and steady rate.
A little background...I am 37 and last June/July, I started having trouble with my left foot. I used to be a regular exerciser (walking, aerobics). I was not hard core, but was always exercising both to lose weight and be in acceptable shape. I have always struggled with my weight. I can be careful of everything that goes in my mouth, but I still have always been overweight. I know that means that I just have to b that more careful!
With this foot injury, the exercise basically had to stop. I have an unexplained pain in the top of my foot on the middle and 4th metatarsal bone area (more toward the middle of my top foot). I can walk on it at times without pain, but then by evening the top part of my foot that I am describing is very painful. It will also hurt down the outside of my foot. Sometimes, if I have done a lot of walking during the day, it will start hurting mid-day as well. I go to bed and then in the morning...the first 10 minutes of walking....is extremely painful. The podiatrist was absolutely no help at all. The podotherapist put me in an orthodic that I am not sure but might be causing more pain.
So...I have decided that after all these months...I am determined to stay off of the foot and use crutches for the next 4-6 weeks. I only use that foot when absolutely necessary and that is with minimal weight bearing. I am going to see how it goes for the next 4-6 weeks and if there is no improvement, I will try a different podiatrist. We do not have insurance, and I am not sure they will truly be able to do anything anyway.
Now...I feel that mentally and physically I have to lose some weight. I have gained roughly 15 pounds over the last several months with my inactivity. I am trying to do about 30 minutes of leg lifts (various sorts), every other day hand weight weight lifting, and situps/pushups. Anything that will put no weight on my foot, I try to do. I also know that I am going to have to count calories and become very diligent in watching my intake.
I just need some suggestions for exercises and how best to lose the weight. If anyone has had a similar situation, I would appreciate any feedback you can offer.
Thanks

Welcome to the site! I'm new here too.
Sorry to hear about your foot. It sounds like a good idea to use crutches for some weeks. If your foot hurts that bad when walking a lot of exercise is out of the question, but maybe swimming could be worth a try? Wish you the best of luck with everything!0 -

Swimming would be great, but it is really not possible here. There is an indoor pool at our local YMCA, but we live in the country so it is not very convenient. The pool is not the greatest either.
Now I just have to wait for the warmer weather....I guess I did not really think about swimming...so thanks. At least I have that to look forward to!
I did try to do a more vigorous 15 minutes of sit-ups, pushups, etc. at a quicker pace. It did at least raise my heart rate and I even started to break a sweat. Not much, but it is at least bit of cardio. I guess it just makes me go UGH because I used to walk 4 miles (15 minute mile) a day with no problem. I always enjoyed the walking down the country road. Now, it just gets discouraging the thought that 15 minutes of "cardia" calesthenics raises the heart rate.... ! Someday when I am back up and going again, I will appreciate the walking and exercising all the more.0
