Dairy? What's your 'opinion'?

Everyone has a different opinion. What's your opinion or experience with dairy and weight loss? I LOVE dairy and I feel like it keeps me full, but I swear, on the days that I drink even 8 oz of skim milk, my weight is up the next day. Just curious if eating dairy or cutting dairy has helped you lose weight.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Is your weight really UP, or is it just natural fluctuation? Before I started dieting, I read a number of books and theories about dieting, took the small amounts of wisdom from some, and made my plan (that's basically healthy eating w/ a side of how to stay feeling full longer). One of the things I picked up from the south beach diet is that reduced/non-fat dairy products are great. they are some of the only true reduced-fat and calorie foods. almost all other reduced fat foods add back sugar/starch to make up for the loss in fat. Dairy doesn't. I love string cheese and the finlandia reduced fat cheeses to add a bit of fat and flavor to my food. plus there's all the protein and calcium that your body needs (especially as a woman). so... YES, my opinion, DAIRY == GOOD. All things in moderation, of course.0

There are many different schools of thought on this, but I pretty much just look at my calories and macros. I don't drink milk, just because I don't really like it, but if I want to eat cheese on something I just look at how many calories, fat, sodium, protein, etc are in it. If I've got room in my day for it, then I'll eat cheese. If I don't, then I don't.
My mother, on the other hand, RARELY eats any dairy, and she said it had something to do with the way your body breaks down lactose like sugar or something. I don't know, I wasn't really paying attention. But, to her credit, she has lost about 30 lbs, is in better shape than I've ever been in my life, is a personal trainer, and is 57 years old. So maybe she's onto something.0 -
Dairy is designed to grow small calves into big cows in a short period of time. There's lactose, growth factor, hormones, and other naturally-occurring things in milk that don't do a body good, in my opinion. My thoughts on this is based on both science, and my intuitive reaction. Think about it: you're drinking glandular secretions from another species.0

I don't drink milk because I prefer soy milk, but let me tell you, I am all over cheese and yogurt like it's my job! I'm 5'6 and weigh 119 lbs. I don't think it's hurting me.0

I personally hate milk and used to only have it in my cereal. Now that I am in my new lifestyle of eating, I gave up eating cereal, so I never have milk anymore. If I have a turkey burger or something like it I will use a slice of fat free cheese, but I generally don't eat much dairy due to being lactose intolerant and just plain not liking it. I do miss ice cream though.0

I am (well was) a huge cheese fan, since I started paleo I had to cut out all dairy...I've found that I've been losing weight more efficiently as well becoming regular.
I do miss that cheese though!0 -
It isn't like dairy products are some new fad people are trying out. We've been drinking milk and making foods from it for thousands of years. If it were truly harmful we'd all be dead by now.
But like the above poster I rarely drink it myself, just never been a big fan. Cheese, ice cream and yogurt however are a different story...0 -
It depends. A significant portion of the population has a mild intolerance or allergy to dairy. Most of them don't realize it. When those people eliminate dairy they are much healthier and easily drop 10-30 lbs. For the other half of the population it's more a matter of managing their macros.0

My 'opinion'? People who think dairy isn't good for us are among the some 75% of adult humans who cannot digest lactose. For them it is true: dairy isn't good for them. It's not true for me, one of the 25% of adult humans who can digest lactose. Cows' milk was an important enough part of my northern European ancestors' diet that they evolved lactase persistence and kept producing the milk-digesting enzyme lactase throughout their lives.

I stopped eating meat and I use very little dairy products. I cut out using eggs in my diet, which makes it a little more difficult for me because I'm an avid baker. I don't like the taste of milk, never have, never will, but I keep nonfat dry milk powder in the pantry in case I need to cook something that needs milk. Just rehydrate it and go. But I love cheese. I have yet to meet a cheese I didn't like. I will never stop using or eating cheese.
Dairy is good for you because it is a dense protein and there is usually some type of fat to it, which are both important in a diet. Obviously you wouldn't want to have a diet made up of pure cheese, because you'd be consuming a boatload of saturated fat. My dairy use is this: a Greek yogurt for breakfast, a portion of cheese for a snack or a portion of cheese for pasta or something for dinner. And I also love ice cream, so I get the healthiest ice cream/dairy dessert for a snack.0 -
I love dairy and see nothing wrong with it except for those that can't digest it. I don't see how this topic (on various boards) gets so heated! I have to laugh at the people who are all against milk and yet think ice cream is the best thing out there.... what do they think it is made of!0

Obviously you don't know me very well. :laugh:0 -
Lactose intolerant here so I avoid almost ALL dairy. I have almond milk with my cereal. I have cheese from time to time, but always in small doses, mostly goat cheese and feta. Like with most food, it's a personal decision.0

go on facebook or twitter to my health page http://www.facebook.com/#!/MeechsMotivation or @meechrae & ill make this a topic but i love dairy switched to almond milk & light or 2% milk dairy products0

This. I LOVE Dairy. I stick with lowfat dairy as well. Provelone, Swiss and Mozzerella cheeses are usually a bit lower in calories than chedder or colby. Low fat cottage cheese and on RARE occasion, ICE CREAM.0 -

Well I tried drinking glandular secretions from the same species, and she got all freaked out about it....0 -

Hey this is cool! Good to know!0 -
I love cheese& yogurt. I can put milk in my cereal, but I can't drink it on it's own. Tastes nasty. Love dairy, but I don't have too much of it or I feel sick.0

If you have a lactose intolerance or a general allergy to dairy products, you could be, uh, stuffed up. A symptom of dairy sensitivity is alteration of your digestion. That could cause or contribute to weight gain.0

You know I was thinking about this recently. Specifically I was wondering why cow's milk is a staple of our diet but it's completely taboo to drink human milk above a certain age. There are supposed to be great health benefits especially if someone is severely ill. There have been some instances of giving cancer patients breast milk from banks to help them recover from chemo. It's very rare and hush hush.
So I was wondering is it seen as a form of cannibalism? Exploitation of women? Both and/or something else?
Mostly I was wondering where the term "nursing to heath" and "nurse" (like in a hospital) came from. Is it figurative or coming from ancient (perhaps Roman?) practice? Man my mind wanders...0 -
Outside of a milk allergy or intollerance I doubt it makes much difference. I don't like milk so I don't give drinking it much thought. I do eat reduced fat cheese pretty regularly though.0

Absolutely. I started having really bad (and painful) digestive problems when I was about 18. I took fiber supplements, drank tons of water, and everything else my doctor recommended to help, but it didn't really start getting better until I stopped eating (most) dairy. No doctor ever mentioned that might work; I just noticed one day that I felt pretty sick after I had a bowl of cereal. Then it happened again. So I stopped drinking milk altogether. I felt better pretty quickly. Then I cut yogurt and sour cream. Even better. Recently, I've even stopped eating cheese -- except a little here and there, but nothing like I used to, -- and it's made a big difference. Kind of sucks, because I LOVE cheese, and sour cream, too.0 -
I consume dairy daily so it doesn't have an effect on my scale. What has an effect on my scale are poor food choices! For me, learning to eat a balanced and varied diet including healthy portions is key. And besides, I think I would actually fall down and die if I went even a DAY without cheese!!!
Mmmmmmmmcheesemmmmmmm0 -
Whole fat dairy products....I am attached to the bathroom feeling naseaous.
Low fat dairy - I am fine with it in moderation. I will eat a couple slices of low fat cheese (string) and a few others. I won't eat half a block because the 1. Is tons of fat, and 2. It would stop me up like a cement mixer.0 -

Good question. I don't know. I do know that French has two words for the English "nurse": infirmiere for a nurse in a hospital and nourisse for a wet nurse. I had a friend who embarrassed himself in French by saying that he'd gone to la nourisse after he'd injured himself!0
