I'm 22 and not really over weight (about 145+ and 5'7) but I have trouble using the machines (Elliptical, ect) at the gym because my knees start to hurt almost immediately. I've never had any issues with my knees before and walking is perfectly fine for me. Its just the machines.

Does anyone know what might cause this or how I could help it?

Thanks in advance!

I had had some knee pain from doing lunges, but not to bad until I got an elliptical. For some reason It just kills my knees like nothing else. I use the treadmill a lot with no pain.
I am going to try to not use it even though I love the workout.

Have you talked to anybody who works at the gym? My automatic thought is maybe your shoes? You might need better ones, or maybe put some padding in them?

I have actually NEVER thought of that! Right now the only shoes I have that are even close to work out acceptable is my converse which have no support!

It may surprise you but the source of most knee pain isn't actually your knees but a result of weak glutes or hips, there are lots of exercises that can help. You can find a number of workouts on runnersworld.com (http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120,s6-238-263-266-13852-0,00.html).

Knee pain may also be a symptom of IT band syndrome but that's usually an overuse injury.

Squats & lunges will probably help too. Warm up before your workout and stretch afterwards.

    Hope this helps.
