Sore and Swollen Knee

OK, so. I have been working out hard and am feeling great. I do Jillian's 30 day shred and then I do 20 - 30 min of cardio, whether treadmill, track, bike or elliptical. The only problem is, over the past few days my knee is bothering my. Not excruciating pain or anything, just a lot of pressure and swelling around the kneecap. My daughter has the same problem and when I took her in, they said it was the bursal sack and to just take ibuprophen and rotate heat and ice.

Any other ideas? I can't see doing this everyday.

Thanks for your help.

I have issues with my right knee at times. Three years ago I slipped on some ice and shattered the fibula and fractured the tibia just barely below the knee cap.....I had to have surgery to repair it and now have multiple plates and screws. It is always a nuisance now but gets worse in the winter. I cant do ice packs, they make the pain unbearable. I have found that for me any thing low impact doesnt effect it to much (walking or biking) but there is no way I can run. If I try it swells up like a balloon and then is really stiff and achey the next day. I hope you get some relief. I know knee pain sucks! GOOD LUCK!

I'm betting that there's a form issue doing JM's exercises. I've heard over and over again on the forums how people's knees are aching from 30 day shred. It's one thing to watch and another to perform. Unless you have had an experienced trainer watch your form while you perform squats and jumps, I'm betting that this is where the issue is originating from.

Something VERY common in women exercisers, especially those with wider hips (like me!) is "runner's knee", or chondromalacia:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chondromalacia_patellae

Long story short, your knee cap can be pulled slightly off track by the tendons that run down from your hip to your knee, and this can cause rubbing of the cartilage under your knee cap, creating inflammation and pain. Happens more often in women because of wider hips than men, and more often in women with wider hips than others, because the wider your hips the more of a sharp angle that tendon is taking from your knee.

A couple years ago I had dropped a bunch of weight and was doing really great with running. One day at the gym I ran 4 miles on the treadmill not particularly fast. Though it was longer than I usually did, I didn't think much of it cause a few months earlier I had completed a 10k. Well, my knee completely blew up! Major swelling and pain.

Eventually I saw a doctor who diagnosed me with this, and I started 3 months of twice a week physical therapy to get the swelling down. I limped for a few months, was elevating and icing daily, and pretty much stayed away from exercise :(

Eventually I started with the bike, until my doctor told me the last step in the healing process was actually to start running again.

My advice to you - stay OFF of it for 4-5 days (as in no exercise), elevate and ice multiple time per day, take ibuprofen, and if the swelling and pain hasn't decreased after that see your doctor.
