Hi, I weigh 138 pounds and am 5 1' and i usually study around 9 -11 hours a day. according to the following website: http://www.healthstatus.com/calculate/cbc I lose around 1000 if not more cal. by studing. Should i include studying as an exercise if i am burning calories or no?

Haha, omg I wish! I'm a med student so I feel ya about the studying but sadly, although my brain is churning away the glucose, my heart rate is hardly in zone lol. Unless you count the palpations I get when I realized how much crap I need to learn in the next 48 hours (which of course is why I'm wasting time on MFP)

yes, those calories you burn sitting there are why you eat on a regular basis. Being alive burns calories, glad you now know. You eat to keep moving. Working out is how you burn EXTRA calories for weight loss.

If you didn't study you'd still burn the same calories.

I study quite a bit, too, but I don't count that, haha. I know your brain needs glucose, but I can't imagine it would need 1000 calories of it, even for higher brain functions, because that's just a ridiculous amount of energy for an activity that does not require that much extra. I would think that would be just barely above the minimum of what you need to just function on a daily basis, and would be negligible overall.

Would you not simply add it to your bMR if it daily?
  • It would be nice for all of us students out there, wouldn't it? haha.

Those calories are burnt because you are alive while studying. Being alive burns a lot of calories. Unfortunately, this state of living is already calculated into your goal.
