Interrupted workouts

I have a toddler and a seven month old. I try timing my workouts for when my younger child has gone down for her morning nap and the older can watch her fav show. However, they still get plenty of interruptions! A 30 minute workout might get stretched out to 45 minutes. I am wondering how this affects the calorie burn of the workout. Can it decrease the calorie burn because the heart rate goes down? Or is any change negligable?

I have been considering getting a heart monitor, just haven't got there yet...

Thanks for your input!

Hmmm I think your best bet would be to get a hrm. With the interruptions your heart rate will drop (unless the interruptions consist of chasing your children around the house at 10mph, then that's another story! :p) when your heart rate drops your calorie burn slows down and then when you pick it back up again it takes your body a few minutes to get back up to speed again. I'm no doctor but this is what I think happens anyways.

With a hrm you can accurately account for these interruptions. Who knows, maybe the extended period of high rate rate followed by not so high but still higher than average heart rate actually makes you burn more!
