OK, I did my 1st ever kettlebell class today. I used to think that even though I still want to lose 90 pounds, that I was fairly fit. But this workout just destroyed me... Like I can't sit and get up without lots of soreness, and this is only 5 hours after the workout. I can't imagine what tomorrow will be like. I have a huge tub that I will be taking a long hot bath in shortly ( no jets )... but is there anything I can do NOW to make tomorrow less painful?

Ibuprofin?
Hang in there, we all have to start somewhere.0 -
After my first Kettlebell experience, I was sore for 4 days :-).
Muscles I didn't even know I had hurt like hell.
The 2nd and 3rd times will be better. I promise :-)0 -
Any type of anti-inflammatory and lots of water!!!!!0
-
Soak as long as you can in the hottest water possible, and I second the aleve or motrin. Both together really seem to minimize the next day aching, compared to how bad I'm feeling the evening of.0

Don't cold, icy baths help with muscle soreness? Idk, I think I saw that on Biggest Loser.0
-
Take a few ibuprofen, use a heating pad. Tomorrow is a new day. Keep up the good work.0

A long bath sounds fantastic, plus some pain reliever.
And of course a good night's sleep!0 -
Really with the pain you will feel there is not much help just keep moving I get this every time I do squats Naproxin works best for me as it is a anti-inflammatory good luck0

DRINK WATER LIKE ITS GOING OUT OF STYLE!!!! and stretch your muscles. The stretching will hurt now but it will make you feel better in the end.0
-
Stretch! I know from experience that if you dont stretch before and after an intense workout, you WILL hurt yourself the next day.0
-
And even tho you hurt like crazy tomorrow, still do mild exercise, like walking, even if you can't do much else. It helps the soreness go away faster.0
-
You sound like me after my first workout with weights after waaaaay too many years! I was shaky afterwards & soreness set in by evening - the next day was brutal. So was the one after that. Ibuprophen did help me, as well as just taking it easy. Short, easy walks help stretch things out, but sadly, the soreness returned as soon as I stopped moving. I moaned and groaned when getting in or out of our truck, getting up or sitting down on the sofa, stairs were horrible. The warm bath should help.
Don't be afraid to take a few days off and let your muscles heal though - they got a rude awakening today!0 -

Can hinder proper muscle repair and growth!
My advice: warm bath, stretch, plenty of protein, and stick with it! The first time is always the hardest.0 -
LOL, well thank you... I was just about to bump this thread.... I did take a long HOT bath.... I will get some naproxin,,, and I have a heating pad.... Seriously though, I have NEVER felt this sore, not even after 100 mile bike ride I took ( back in the day when I ride 20 miles a day, a few times a week ).0

ice bath, stretch, foam roll, and relax! drink lots of water and have lots of protein and don't be surprised if you can't move tomorrow.0
-
Make sure you stretch!0

You're gonna be just fine, your body is not used to working out.........I love that kind of pain......:00

stretch! Be sure your muscles are nice and warm (after bath is good) for a nice ab stretch lay on your back, point your toes toward the far wall, reach your arms all the way over head and point your fingers to the other wall

How can ibuprofin hinder proper muscle growth and repair? It's an anti-inflammatory and pain reliever.0 -
Make sure if you stretch that you do it AFTER your bath, so your muscles will be all warm and pliable haha. I've also heard good things about bananas after a workout...the potassium possibly? And like others have said, make sure you do some light activity tomorrow..even just a slow walk..it'll help so much!0
-
Potassium too, if I've read the research correctly. eat bananas and coconut milk. both super high in potassium. That and plenty of water and stretching!0
-
Advil every four hours and "Icy Hot".0

Cool.... I was just about to make a banana smoothie!0 -
Definitely take something & that bath should help. Make sure to keep moving. if you sit still you will feel worse (not necessarily exercise, but definitely dont veg out on the couch too long). lastly, take something before your next class. it will help with the soreness some. kudos for starting to workout. the soreness is a good sign and will lessen with each workout! keep up the good work!0

Ha! I was right where you are at last week.
Do you have a rolling pin? If you do, roll it over your sore muscles. They make commercial 'sticks' just for this purpose. You might want to invest in one if you're' going to keep at kettlebells and/or running. I love my stick!
I promise that one day you will be able to sit down on the toilet without having a tear drip down your face and you'll be able to pick up something you've dropped on the floor. Not tomorrow, but one day.0 -

I'm not sure if you meant take Aleve and Motrin together, but that's really a bad idea, too much NSAID's is bad for your stomach. If you meant hot bath+ aleve (or motrin) then by all means go for it! Also, I've found epsom salts in the hot bath helps as well as taking fish oil a couple times a day.0 -
Protein. Since I've started having a protein shake after big workouts I've noticed a lot less soreness.0

Hot baths after muscle workouts are definitely a good plan. They loosen up the muscles so they don't get all tight later. Also stretching is extremely important. I also recommend doing some purposeful light exercises the next day, walking around, stretching, that kind of stuff, to really keep it loose. If you don't stretch and do light exercises you'll tighten up like crazy and it totally hurts.
I purchased P90X a while back and they have this "recovery drink" that you take within an hour after muscle workouts, and I gotta say, I feel WAY better the next day if I have some of that after a muscle workout. It really just consists of a good combination of vitamins and minerals that help your muscles heal faster so you can be ready for your next workout sooner. Great stuff, I recommend it.
Most of all, though, I recommend letting the soreness really PUMP YOU UP. If you are SORE, that means you are doing it RIGHT. If you weren't sore then you didn't work out enough. Your soreness means you are making progress. Whatever you can do in your workout is awesome. Don't start thinking "Oh, but I could have done more" or "Man, that other guy can do so many more than me," you gotta be proud of what YOU accomplished, big or small. Keep up the good work!0 -
Don't forget to eat something packed with protein after workouts. It will help rebuild muscle. Also, keep moving. You are going to be in sooooo much pain in the morning but keep moving. You might think its counter-productive but doing another exercise the next day will cut down on the soreness. I've noticed that when I just start workouts and I'm sore, if I workout again the next day then my soreness isn't as bad (that's just my experience though). Hydrate.0
