The Patronizing "Good For You"

I really have begun to hate this expression. Not because of the actual words but more because of the connotation that normally accompanies it. The tone normally denotes "Well, you should be doing that anyway because your such a fatass". Kinda makes me mad, like the repsonse would be different if I were already in shape.

It's one of those phrases that is very dependant on the tone of delivery. I've thrown out some GFY and genuinely meant it, not at all in a patronizing way, but I could see someone giving it in a sarcastic type of backhanded compliment

Ever think maybe some people are just simply not that good at social interaction.

A lot of people have that "social voice" or the "phone voice" as many call it and they say things like that to be civil not intending to be back handed in any way.

Don't worry, be happy, get over it.

I say "Good for you!" a lot. It adds variety to comments, so I'm not always saying "Way to Go", "Great!" , etc. I mean it as a pat on the back no matter what. I'd be the last person to decide someone "should be doing that anyway". Why? Because the goal you see on my ticker is merely my MINI goal. I know. WTF(rench toast)!
Don't over think comments here. None of my friends say anything mean spirited to me, nor I to them. (I may ask them if they aren't feeling well if something is way out of wack on their diary.)
Cloudbustr makes a good point about the tone of delivery. If someone you are talking with sounds sarcastic when they say that, just smile.: it makes people wonder what you are up to!

Could be that they just don't know what to say. But it's definitly the tone that I'm kinda eh over.
