hello,
I am doing some research on protein powders.

I have a lot of weight to loose (currently 235) and am hitting the gyms 3/4 times a week and eating a balanced diet within my guidelines but never hitting my protein goal set my MFP by a LONG way.

Would protein powder shakes be a good to have after a work out, boost my protein intake and help me lose weight?

if so what brands do you recommend?

seriously need advice! lol

Thank you :)

Its always better to get it through normal natural food but thats not always an option for most people.

Last thing i want to do after work and weights is cook a whole chicken or whatever to hit my protein goals.

I find that Myprotein impact whey is a good brand, hasnt let me down yet and the mocha is omm nom nom.

I'm almost sure that protein powder can also help you gain muscle if you drink it after an extensive workout. I'm not exactly sure though, but that's what I heard.
I drink a protein shake for breakfast and that's it, it usually keeps me full from 6 am to 11:45 pm, and then it's lunch time.

I drink Whey Protein, in Vanilla. I'm interested to see what others say, so I'm gonna sneak in on this and see other answers :blushing:

    Hi there,

If you are determined, they you need a whey isolate as opposed to a blend or peptide (whey and casein which is slow release protein) a mixture of different proteins.

I use Reflex as the taste is really good and you can get a reasonable price if you shop around. Instant whey is isolate with flavour, the chocolate one is delicious and the mint chocolate tastes like an aero! Banana is good but I found the strawberry to be a bit weak but still tastes nice.

You really have to overload the muscles which results in microtrauma and inflammation to the muscle fibres to develop muscles and then you only gain half a pound a week maximum if you're lucky. I wouldn't worry too much about looking like a Men's Health cover model because you add protein shakes to your diet, it takes years to build that kind of muscle.

Don't supplement with whey just for the sake of it or because you've heard someone say you need to. If it fits into your overall diet and it a convenient way to include protein, then by all means buy a tub and enjoy!

Particularly if you're having issues meeting your goals (and MFP's generic settings I consider to be pretty low) having protein shakes wouldn't hurt. I would be careful not to let that become your primary source of protein though.

I did a quick scan of the last few days on your diary. Tuna, fat free milk, eggs (or egg whites if you want to keep the calories down), chicken are all your friends.

    thanks guys

my problem is atm im on a tight budget so do a monthly food shop. the upside is everything is portioned a frozen so im not tempted to go over by things like eggs just go off to quickly and i'm not that keen on them.
I'm going to start eating meat every day and didnt think of tuna- that's a fab idea!

i might give it a go on 1 scoop of powder and getting it up to the guideline naturally, so i'm just getting a boost. hopefully as well i wont want to eat a huge dinner after i've worked out with the protein filling me up :) thanks guys!

Unless you consume a ridiculous amount of calories, your body will consume a fair amount post workout to replenish nutrients etc. Carbohydrates are needed to replace glycogen in the muscles but don't overdo things. Stick to your allocated calories and adjust according around exercise and your daily routine.

Protein will also help you to feel fuller but not as much as slow digesting carbohydrates.

    Hope this helps.

protein shakes never hurt and if your lifting weights, they help with muscle growth and restoration. I personally use 1st Step Pro Wellness Whey Protein after workouts.

I have a protein shake every morning for breakfast. Keeps me satisfied from 7:00 until about noon. I use Jay Robb's Whey Protein mix in Vanilla. I mix with skim milk and a tablespoon of Hershey's unsweetened cocoa and then freeze for about an hour until it's really slushy and thick or I will mix with Trop 50 orange juice, frozen berries and Activia yogurt for a more fruity shake. I did not care for the chocolate flavored protein mix, way too artificially sweet for my tastebuds. Sometimes I throw in some Chia seeds for added fiber also.
