There are many protein shakes out there--it depends upon what you're looking for.
Personally, I try to avoid the artificial sweeteners that are around in so many things, so that really cuts down on the selection. Also, you can choose between type of protein - dairy whey, soy, egg, hemp, and more. According to the current issue of On Fitness magazine, whey protein is the strongest form of protein known to man. Whey protein isolate is considered to be better than whey protein concentrate--it is more easily absorbed. I could go on and on and totally replicate the article here, but you could probably pop by a Barnes and Noble bookstore and look for the magazine, too. It's really awesome and gives some really good information.
That being said, the two protein powders I use are Optimum Nutrition 100% Gold Standard Whey - Natural Chocolate flavor and Full Circle Whey - Natural Vanilla flavor. I purchase the ON whey online through the Vitamin Shoppe--the 5-lb tub is ~ $42 with shipping, etc., compared to $75+ that I've seen elsewhere. I purchase the Full Circle Whey at my Hy-Vee in the natural food section. It's a smaller container and costs ~ $22.
One serving of the ON Chocolate whey is 130 calories and has 24 g of protein. One serving of the Full Circle whey is 81 calories and has 18 g of protein.
I like to make my protein drinks in my Magic Bullet blender (LOVE that thing!). To the vanilla, I add 1 cup unsweetened almond milk and 1/2 cup of frozen fruit like peaches, blueberries, strawberries, and mangos. To the chocolate, I add 1 cup unsweetened almond milk and a tablespoon of baking cocoa (I like it really chocolate-y). Some people also add bananas, but I have found I prefer to chew my bananas and not drink them. It's a weird personal preference of mine.
So, this is what I use--by all means, it's not the only way to go, but it's the way I've found to stay away from as much artificial stuff (and soy--I'm not too sure about soy because there's some scary stuff out there about it) as I can. Hope that this helps you!

i take Gold standard 100% whey. I get it from my gym per my trainer. It is also sold online and at GNC. The calories are 120, fat 1, sugar 1. It is very good. I drink 1 after workout, 1 before bed(45min-1hr.), and 1 in place of my afternoon snack. They have 17 different flavors.0

hey!
i picked up some "BNS Lean Dessert" chocolate fudge pudding" mix over the weekend. Made one today with water & a packet of equal and it was good  about 150cal, very low carbs, per shake.
It was about $30 where i'm from, which indicates it's about half that in the US:happy:
hope this helps:flowerforyou:0 -

I get the vanilla ice cream in the Gold Standard 100% whey and mix it with fat free or 2%milk and a drop of almond extract. It is yummy and very quick0 -

Jay Robb protein powder. All natural, sweetened with Stevia.................
I buy it online and you can get individual packets so you can try it out without getting a big tub of it.
