The most powerful tool for me was the food diary and learning to use it BEFORE the damage is done.

Know you're going to Ruby Tuesdays' for lunch? Enter your order here in the morning. When you see how badbadbad that big bacon burger is, it'll make you poke around the menu for something healthier. Then when you get to the restaurant you can have a seafood thing and take 1/2 of it home and load up on their yummy salad and just be so much better to yourself.

Pretty soon you get used to it, and it becomes a habit, and you've changed your whole lifestyle and your clothes get loose and you feel great and it's just super.

Welcome aboard. Use the tools, enter your stuff before you eat and use that to plan wisely and the rest takes care of itself.

I do what Casper suggested. I preplan my menu for the day and work in special food I like or jack up m y calories on days I plan to work out heavily. I can see how certain foods impact my overall stats for the day and either adjust my useage of them or find alternates (if the impact is negative).

The exercise thing is nice too, because you can see an immediate effect on your calorie allowance by exercising. 40 minutes on the elliptical or an easy 1 mile walk? How badly do I want to eat ____ tonight?

Hi! I just signed up today and am looking forward to a new, more active & healthy lifestyle! I've been putting this off for too long, and have finally decided it's time to get serious. I turn 30 in a month, and have two beautiful children & a wonderful husband that I NEED to get in shape for!

Anyone have suggestions for an easy way to start gradually? Any ideas would be helpful!
    Thanks,
    Heather

I'd recomment that for starters you just log what you're eating and don't worry too much about changing. This will help you to understand what's good and what's bad. Pretty soon you won't want the bad stuff,,,

Then you can work toward not going over, finding ways to eat more on less calories (Note - raw veggies & fruits), it comes. It's kinda fun - a puzzle. I have dreamed up a few yummy recipes that I honestly can't eat more the 300 calories of - just too much food. That's fun...

Hi, I'm back again and ready to loose more. My goals are:

Journal food & exercise on MFP
    Eat healthy
Weigh & measure food (it’s a big eye awakener)
    Try new liter recipes
Most of all be realistic and connect my eating with my retired life style so as not to put the weight back on…
    Stay positive
Encourage – Encourage – Encourage each other!!!!

Have joined a challenge to loose 20lb by Christmas.

Never give up, one day at a time...

I agree 100% with the strategies Casper0 and Stormieweather mention. A little planning & understanding is basically all you need!
