Is there a real reason I get "hangry"?

When I don't eat enough, frequently enough I get what my wife calls"hangry". Angry because I'm hungry. Is there scientific, physiological/hormonal or any other reasons for this?

Yeah hun. It's a drop in your blood sugar, which naturally makes you cranky or sleepy

It happens alot when we are out because I don't want fast food or we are busy and there is just no way to get what I need. Its more frustration than anger

Well, every lifestyle is different and I'm currently unattached, so I have a bit more leeway for what I do to combat what you describe

I can say I do not eat out of my own volition (parents might drag me if I pop up for a visit). I keep a stash of water (several liters) and energy bars (Snickers Marathon are a current fave) in my car at all times so if I'm out and about I won't get zinged by a calorie deficit and blow my daily when I get home.

Carry some snacks with you! Nuts are good, yummy and easy to store
You might need a a manbag though :indifferent:

I used to get low blood sugar if I didn't eat for three or four hours. I was very irritable, especially if I had to wait for food. Sounds like what you might be experiencing. I'd try to have a snack available so that I didn't get to that starving, shaky, angry place.

Good points about the low blood sugar and needing to snack. I would suggest carrying a fiber bar or baggie of almonds with you for times when you feel irritated. (obviously look for low calorie and portion control there) Also, go for a walk for at least 30 minutes. That always seems to help me. I would also get your blood sugar checked for diabetes. No matter how well you are doing to lose weight or maintain diabetes can still be an issue for you. Hope that helps. I personally am considered borderline diabetic but my doctor has not put me on any meds yet since he knows I am losing weight and is keeping tabs on me.

Thanks the advice on carrying snacks. Will chuck some in the glove boxes of our cars. Coincidentally I'm going to have a check up tomorrow so might swell test for diabetes as my dad, his brother and my grandad have it.
