Fast food really is crap

I realize I'm stating the obvious. It just really hit home with me today. I have been eating relatively healthy for a few months now, but today was a strange day filled with crappy eating. I ate 2250 calories consisting of an egg and cheese croissandwich from Burger King, a cheeseburger happy meal from Mcdonald's and Girl Scout cookies. I sneaked a few fruits and veggie in there, and managed to have a fairly OK dinner.
Well, all afternoon I felt really irritated and was annoyed with everyone around me for no good reason. I felt better after dinner and even better after burning 225 calories on the stationary bike. It really hit home for me how bad this stuff is for you. When I was eating it regularly, it wasn't so obvious how bad this stuff makes me feel if I overdo it, since I overdid it on almost a daily basis.
It does me me wonder though. Was I so cranky today because of the crap they put in the fast food? Or because even though I was eating plenty of calories, I really wasn't feeling full for very long?

I don't know the answer to your question.. but after I get the fast food out of my body.. and then try to eat it again..
I get.. Pardon this.. diarrhea, painful joints, exhausted, drugged-like sleep, and uneasy dreams.. not really nightmares, but just very uneasy... angry.. and desperate. And the weird thing is..the next day I want more.. crazy huh.0 -
This happens to me too, I generally eat low carb and no wheat. When I do have wheat or junk food I get blood sugar fluctuations, highs & lows, bad moods and crave more junk. It's a vicious cycle!
When your body doesn't get the nutrients it needs from what you eat it causes you to crave more food. ANY food.0 -
Hmm not sure. I had fast food today since I was traveling home. Had a cheeseburger from McDonalds and enjoyed every bite. No guilt and no gross feeling0

Its the sugar they put in the fast food. Sugar is a know addictive, so you eat it, feel crap but still come back wanting more. Sugar is your enemy, begun Satan!0

It could be that mentally you knew you overate and blamed yourself which made you cranky.

I think everyone is different. I notice that when I eat home cooked meals, complex carbs and good proteins, I don't crave sugars, white breads and fried food as much. If I do treat myself I tend to start craving all the stuff I work hard not to eat on a daily basis and get awful mood swings. I'm still going to treat myself, but from now on I'm going to be careful and plan out my meals better.0

Yes it is crap. It's so not worth it. This is from someone who blew 1000+ calories on it today <regret>
Do I feel better? Of course not. I feel like a bloated failure!
here's a recent article that talks about how fast food affects pleasure pathways: http://www.scripps.edu/news/press/20100329.html
and here's a recent 60 Minutes about food engineering: http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-18560_162-57330816/the-flavorists-tweaking-tastes-and-creating-cravings/ [here's the best part: Safer (reporter): "You're tryin' to create an addictive taste?" Hassel (scientist): "That's a good word." Streich (scientist): "Or something that they want to go back for again and again."]
interesting, in a depressing kind of way.
ETA: still I know it was my choice to eat it.0 -
I generally try to eat a mostly nutrient-dense diet at home. I think I control my appetite better this way. Whether it's my body turning off my hunger because I have eaten the macro- and micronutrients it needs, I can't tell you.
When I eat out on occasion, it doesn't seem to bother me. I just ate at Panera: 1/2 cheeseless Mediterranean sandwich and soy cappuccino. I'm actually feeling fine. I don't think all fast-food is awful, but I know for myself, that I can't eat it everyday without wanting to overeat my calorie budget.
As for crabbiness--life's ups and downs sort of dictate those moods for me.0 -
I stay away from fast food simply for the fact that when I eat it once, i crave it more. I once heard that McDonalds has a chemical in their food that makes you crave it more. Creepy!0

^^^ A very good answer... Food is food period there is no crap food and there is no good food... Food is just food and we need to stop labelling it as good or bad as this is what causes problems with guilt etc.
I enjoyed a cheese burger at the pickle barrel today with coleslaw, fries and a 50g bar of dark chocolate. I feel great!0 -

exactly. I eat fast food at least once a week, sometimes more. I just had KFC for dinner the other night, complete with mashed potatoes and gravy and the biscuit. still finished 200-plus under my allowance for the day and it was delicious.
you can make smart choices, even at fast food joints. get the nutritional info and base your decision off that before you get there. the aforementioned taco bell is nice, and I hit that a few times a month. can get a meal there for less than 500 calories. add that fruitista for a few hundred calories for a nice treat, too.
food is food. only you can affix a label to a particular food.0 -

I don't think my crankiness today was due to guilt. Yeah, I know I could have made better choices but I'm not beating myself up over it. I'll do better tomorrow and the next day and so on. I've enjoyed a splurge meal many a time without feeling so yucky afterword. I think today had to do with the fact that until dinner, almost everything I ate was junk food with very little nutrients.
Food may be food. But if you eat a lot of fast food, it's pretty hard to get all your nutrients your body needs to be healthy. I guess my being cranky could be a result of something else. But maybe it's good to blame it on McDonald's.0 -
You wouldn't have eaten that way if you hadn't had a stressful schedule to begin with.
But I had to eat fast food yesterday when I was downtown. It was just a hot dog, but it lay on my stomach like a ton of bricks. I have definitely been enjoying eating lighter and fresher.0
