Ok so i've been doing pretty good with the whole weight loss thing, watching what I eat, working out at least 4 days a week, etc etc.

And then my 30th birthday hit on friday and I became a little lax on things, not drinking a lot of water, etc etc. My lowest weight over the past week was 194 and now im back up to 199-200. I havent eaten total crap over the weekend (ive eaten chicken and veggies when I can, stayed away from grease as much as possible), and am wondering if its possible to have gained 5 pounds back of fat in just 3 days?

I thought the same thing (I had a gained 4 lbs after a night of drinking), but it might have had to do with my cycle too. At any rate it's gone again now, plus another 5 lbs. Just keep on going. It will work out if you stick with it.

I can tell you, I won't be drinking again until I hit the 50 lb mark which I hope will be before June. :-)
  • Lots of factors; hormones changes, water retention, sodium intake. Just because you're.not eating junk doesn't necessarily mean you're eating the right foods.. you need a healthy, balanced diet

I haven't had my 8 glasses of water this weekend really, so could it just be water retention?

5lbs of fat is 17,500 calories. If you ate that many, then you did gain 5lbs of fat.

If you were to gain 4-5 TRUE lbs, you would have had to eaten 14-17,500 calories in one weekend.

My guess is water retnetion, food has water in it too, and if you have a high sodium diet, then it will soak it up like a sponge. So not getting 8cups of water doesn't mean that you aren't retaining water, more water means it goes through you faster.

Plus you have environmental factors, body factors, hormones, etc. Weight will fluctuate naturally 5-8 lbs (I've seen more) in the course of a given week.

Water retention has nothing to do with how many glasses of water you drink. It's mostly based on how much sodium you eat, and glycogen storage. Cut carbs, and you drop a ton of water weight, fast. Add carbs back, and the water weight comes back. This is the main reason why people have such large weight fluctuations often. If you don't stick very close to the same amount of carbs day in and day out, you will likely see large water weight swings (carbs are stored as glycogen in the muscle, a full load of glycogen can add up to 8 pounds of water weight.) That's not to say glycogen is a bad thing, as it's the main energy source for muscles during high intensity work.

Did you drink? Always messes with my weight, but usually its short term. Happy Birthday!

I would not fret right now about those five pounds. Get back on track and reweigh yourself in a week or so and see if it falling off. Ultimately in the end I know the numbers on the scale mean a lot in our weight numbers the doctors go by, but if you are seeing the inches fall off then that is what matters. But that is my opinion. Oh and while I am happy to see the numbers drop, I am happier to see the inches coming off.

You would have to eat 10,500 calories over and above maintenance to gain back 3# of fat. I bet you haven't been that lax, LOL. However, the decreased water and more lax diet for a couple of days could mean water-weight and other bloat (for example, the larger amount of food or more calorie dense food processing through your body). Especially if you have also been more lax in your exercise.

One caveat: if you have been eating very low calorie, it is more possible to have put on a small bit of fat due to your slowed metabolism. Not probable, but simply more possible. But it still wouldn't be the entire 3#.

Ya like a fish on friday.....been feeling super bloated ever since. And I did have a lot of carbs over the weekend. Today is my recovery day though, so I'll just eat more protein and low carbs again. Hopefully that'll fix things. The good thing is that my clothes dont feel that much tighter either,.

thats good to know...I went on vacation and gained 10 pounds in 6 days... .I weighed when I got home last night and freaked out!! Went down a pound this morning but I know I walked a ton around theme parks ect. but did not log or pay attention to anything I ate, mainly buffets breakfast and late dinners... So I am thinking getting back on track this week and see if I can get back where I was, I expected a small gain but not this!!!

I was super bloated as well. Once that went away, so did the weight. :-)

Well, they do say, "Once you hit 30..."

But I'm more inclined to think temporary water weight.

    And Happy Belated!!!

Yah, if you had a few drinks and at a few sodium rich things for your birthday, its most likely water retention, also, if you are close to "that" time, it could screw with you!
